my sister, who has friends who SAW this event with their own eyes, sent me this. it is long, but worth a read:
*********************************************
TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES
America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:
"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.
Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.
When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.
When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.
The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.
I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?
Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon?
You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon- not once, but several times-and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at.
Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.
I can name you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.
Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around.
They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."
Stand proud, America!

You know, Gordon Sinclair was a great man, some would say. But he wrote that editorial well over 15 years ago. He died in 1984. It certainly contains some truths and a great sentiment. However, it also contains some untruths and posting it as a recently written article undermines efforts made by Canadians and other nations in the intervening years.
I do not say any of this to lessen my support. We are all in this together. We are as one.

As a Canadian proud to have a neighbour to the south such as that generous, freedom-loving country, The United States Of America, I want to take this time to say God Bless you all. Thank you Jane for twigging my memory for I was privileged to hear the original broadcast by Gordon Sinclair of "The Americans" at 11:45 am on June 5, 1973. It was how I felt then, and it is how I feel today. The hell with what Canadians might have done since. It is the spirit of the broadcast that you cannot replace with the politically correct .... This broadcast is an example of how many, many Canadians feel at this moment of the great loss of many of our neighbours to the south. I think you wonderful friends would be interested to not only read the actual original broadcast, but to hear Gordon Sinclair deliver it. "Sinc" as we used to refer to him then, had a way of delivering a message, and it was that delivery of his that kept me listening, even as a teenager to this stand-up outspoken man, until many years later when he died in 1984. I think you will get out of it what Gordon Sinclair put into it, love and spirit. Click on the link below if you wish to hear it. http://www.rcc.ryerson.ca/schools/rta/ccf/personal/hof/sincla_g.html Once again, thank you for being my good neighbour and friend. God Bless. Jim,
Thank you for your insight and kind words for us "Southerners".
Uncharacteristically I've been at a loss for words since 7:45 (EST) Tuesday morning. There is an anger that I find actually find difficult to to let surface.
My personal feelings are, that at this time, we cannot even imagine the human life magnitude of this tragedy, and we further cannot imagine the necessary response that I personally feel it deserves. This is not some "religious" cum political posturing on the part of those whom have chosen to attack the United States. This is very, very real, evidenced by those who found it necessary to leap to their deaths from a 100 stories two days ago.
The responsible parties, for whatever reasons, felt it "cleansing" to turn innocent persons into cruise missles, had decided to make their point in the most evil of fashion. The price that their supporters and harborers should have to pay for all of their actions will hopefully be very dear.
At the onset of the Gulf War several years ago, I hung my WWII veteran father's coffin flag across the front porch of our home. For those who don't know, a coffin flag is very large (8' x 5'). The following morning it had been stolen. The fact that someone would steal an American flag from the porch of our house was beyond comprehension. I went to American Legion Headquarters, purchased another, and stayed on the porch all night long for 8 straight days, waiting for a personal "moment of opportunity". I could never bring myself to tell my mother what had happened
This country, and the world in general, now has a moment of "opportunity" to send a long overdue message to those, who would behind a mask of cowardice, that in the Free World, and even in the not so free world, these unspeakable evil actions will not be tolerated.
Shit, I think I'll go have a blue drink ( and check the ammo locker)
Bombs away.
God Bless every one of us.

Choochoo, Well said. Kick ass and give 'em hell. They've earned it by their evil ways.
I still remember how to fly a vintage F-86, but even if I could get my hands on one, I couldn't get my butt into the cockpit anymore. Oh well, I'm damn sure your boys and ours, I sincerely trust, will do the job and do it well.
