Anyone know if directv or dish network satellite systems work in Belize?

It's been my understanding that there are some governmental issues that make personal "dishes" unusable in BZ. This is true in many aspects of the telecommunications business in BZ. The only provider of phone service, BTL, (cell, too) operates within a virtual monopoly. There are some promised changes coming in the next few years with respect to competition, but even that is at the whim and wishes of whichever party occupies the government.

The signal is there and you can get it.

Try getting a subscription in the states and bringing the receiver to your place in Belize and put in a 4'dish antenna.

egal or not ??? but I know several people who have them.

We were just in Belize and were speaking to a person who has a system up and running. The trick is to have an address in the US that is approx the same dist to the satellite as your position in Belize, plus or minus 40K. Then once you are up and running you are locked into that spot. Even moving a mile or so will not allow the system to work, they can measure the dist from sat to reciever once it is permanent and if that dist changes they shut you down. Not hard to do but not easy. Dave

Satellite used for telecommunications and Televeision broadcasting are equipped with transponders.

A particular company can lease a number of the transponders to use in transporting their signal. These transponders can be turned on / off remotely.

The signal covers a certain geographical areas called a footprint.

In Belize the footprint is actually very small and is actually just overflow from footprints for surrounding areas.

Since there is no agreement between Belize and the broadcast television networks the transponders that would provide coverage for Belize are not turned on.

So, if you ask your staellite provider if you can receive there signal in Belize the answer will generally be no.

With the use of a 4 foot dish, as opposed to the 18 inch dish usually provided you will be able to pick up ample signal strength to provide a fairly good quality picture. Bigger dishes work even better.

You will not be able to connect the terlephone to the system for ordering of special movies, etc.

Sorry to say that much of this is true.

Just found this posting by chance. Go to www.dbstvforum.com and ask any questions you need about Internet and Satellite Television for Belize. These are the forums for Houston Media Systems. We would be glad to answer any questions you may have. Inventory already in Belize...
