The tragic fire in the early Saturday morning hours which destroyed I believe seven homes and Captain Sharks (a local business) has the Town of San Pedro very sad, but motivated. Many of the business' in town are closed and the Town Park is the sight of a big fundraiser for the victims of the fire, which are homeless in its wake. This particular location in town, the Air Strip Area, is home to many good hard working people who could least afford such a twist in fate. There is need here for some financial assistance. I don't know of any particular vehicle of donation except the Red Cross. Maybe are fearless leader, Marty, can set something up?

I just got back from being out of town and learned of this.
I do not recommend donations being sent to the Red Cross. The Red Cross is a huge international bureaucracy and a hefty percentage of funds raised go to fancy salaries and perks for
its top honchos, expensive offices, etc.
My recommendation is that we seek out people we know and trust in town and ask who needs help, and donate cash directly to the families who lost homes in the fire. That is what I intend to do.

What about those of us who are arriving in the near future. I don't have room to haul down anything, but I am sure a cash donation would be gratefully accepted. Is there a place that is set up for this in town?

Caribe Island has organized a Cash drive for our owners, staff and guests, and have already donated about 1500! If you need a contact person, please get in touch with Tricia ([email protected]) and she can steer you in the right direction.
There are many helping out in fundraising, as well as other donations. It sure was a tragic event, but as always, the islanders and islander-lovers (wanna-bes) are showing their true colors, and love for these people.

There was a big benefit at the City Park on Sunday. With the help of some big hearted people, the sum of $83,xxxBLZ (or $41,500US) was contributed. I do in retrospect agree totally with Susan regarding contributions. I do know that the Belize Bank has opened an account under "Fire Victims Fund". If anyone would care to write a check to the "Fire Victims Fund", I would be happy to deposit it in the Belize Bank. My address is Bill Thornton, PO Box 245, San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, Belize, Central America (do not abbreviate CA., it sometimes ends up in California). PS. DO NOT SEND CASH!!!!!!

I believe until all the facts are in we should focus our energy on something positive--aid for the victims. Rumours run rampant! Pointing fingers and finding fault is easy to do--lets work hard to help. I am here, watched the fire, etc.

Sure hope you received additional checks from other board members Bill.
The $ I sent you surely won't go very far.
Keep us updated on the progress!
Sincerely,
Hope
