Wondering if Richard is still living In San Pedro? Richard has a B.A. in Marine Biology and even helped write a field guide to Ambergris and the reef. Met Rich in '87 while diving. If anyone knows him, I would appreciate you letting me know...

As far as I know he is still living there.
Unfortunately he is a much different man than in 1987. Last I heard he was living in an abandoned boat/catamaran left over from hurricane Keith. A very intelligent guy and from what I understand was very knowledgable about San Pedro and the reef system in Belize in those days. He has a problem with the bottle that he's tried to overcome several times to no avail. Very sad case.
It can happen to the nicest of people.

You can ask around town for him. Most local people can tell you where to find him. He sits a lot on the sidewalks on Front St. around the area of the Mayan Princess and Manelly's Ice Cream shop.

Good luck in your search.

I saw Richie when I was in San Pedro in July. I will be there next week and will most likely run into him again.
Is there a message you want me to give him? I know I will be talking to him. I have known him since I was a child growing up in Belize and I admired his knowledge of Belize's reefs then. As a matter of fact, on his encouragement, I went on to study marine biology.

I just got back from spending 10 days in San Pedro about a week ago. It was my 4th time in San Pedro.

I met Richie on my first visit, 3 years ago, and I see him everytime I go. Each year I am somewhat amazed to see that he really hasn't changed since I saw him first. When I first see him he still remembers my name. His mind is sharp but he does pretty much live on Belikins and whatever food he can get from the locals. I see him everyday of my visit and I try to help him out when I'm down there.

He was sleeping on a houseboat over on the bay side.

He's still a good man and deserves whatever help anyone can give him.

Thank you to all who responded.
When I met Richard in 87, he had just purchased a 27' sailboat and was in the process of rebuilding it for charters. I had the opportunity to help him a little during the refit, and he used to take me along with him when he would go up the coast sailing.
At the time he was on the wagon and did not drink but had in the past. He was staying at Rubies hotel at the time, as was I. I have many fond memories of this man and his generosity. During my visit to Ambergris I did some extensive diving and had most of my own equipment along. Richard particularily liked the shorty wetsuit that I had. Upon my departure I decided it would better suit his needs and left it with him. I hope he enjoyed it as much as I did sailing the coast with him. For those of you who will be seeing him shortly, I hope you can say Hi from me. I can be reached at:

for further information.
