Any recommendations on accomodations for a family of four in Placencia, and which area is best, north, south or in town. We would like to do allot of diving while there any recommendations who to dive with (want good equipment). We are looking at March 2003, stay in Placencia 4-5- days then back to Ambergris.
Thank you,
KJ

Sounds like your looking for Rum Point in just north of Placencia Village.

George and Corol Bevier have a dive operation as part of their Rum Point Resort with a 42' jet dive boat included

You can dive or arrange land / caye tours all at RP

If I remember correctly Lan Sluder rated RP 4*.

Sorry

Best way from Placencia to San Pedro is via Tropic or Maya Air.

Placencia - Belize City Municipal - San Pedro

Thanks for the recommendation, looks great but might be alittle spendy for us, looks like it would be about $250. a night for our family, thats without meals. Any other recommendations?
I had looked up Tropic Air and saw no direct flights from Placencia to San Pedro. I amagine there is no boat transportation either.

KJ,

The flights San Pedro<->Placencia are via Belize City. Cheaper to go through Municipal.

There are many budget and moderate places in Placencia that might be suitable for your family. Most dive operations will pick you up regardless of where you are staying.

In the village, you might look at Tradewinds -- cute little cabins on the water at the south point (cabins are small though so you'd likely need two) or Seabreeze. Just to the north of the village is a wonderful little place -- Mariposa, two suites in a private home.

In that same area, look at Kitty's -- real Belizean feel and considerably cheaper than Rum Point. The beachfront cabanas are great. Kitty also handles rentals of some houses in the village.

At Maya Beach, look at Barnacle Bill's -- two nice one-bedroom cottages on stilts on the beach. Also Maya Breeze Inn has some apartments and cabins.

It has taken a lot longer for Placencia to recover than anyone thought, but by the time you go (assuming no more storms) it should be nice again.

We've stayed two years in a row at Seaspray Hotel in the village of Placencia. It's a nice, clean, family run place, RIGHT on the water. You can walk to most places...restaurants, dive shops, etc. from there. We stayed in a nice double, with private bath, for about $25 US per night. Second floor, nice room. There was a cute restaurant, DE Tatch, right next door, but it got blown away in the hurricane. Anyway, I recommend Seaspray. I can find the e-mail address if you're interested.

A less expensive option would be Nautical Inn
just a little north of Rum Point in Seign Bight.

Again they have their own dive operation "Nauti One Divers".

Ben and Janie Routi are excellent hosts. Its right on the beach with good swimming to.

Check out www.belizenet.com/nautical.html

Nice octogan shaped cabana's on the bea ch w/pool.

Try "The Rough Guide to Belize" by Peter Eltringham. The new 2002 edition has the Blue Hole on the cover. We met the author quite by accident on a bus to San Igancio. Very knowledgable and pleasant fellow! His recommendations about Placencia are quite solid, and the rest of Belize for that matter! Enjoy!
