I just bought a coconut and can't decide the best way to crack it. Since i'm not the proud owner of a machete, which is probable a good thing, what should i do? I thought about whacking it with a hammer, but that would just make a big mess. Any tips, suggestions, pointers? Thanks!

I'm sure it won't taste as good as Palapa Bar's or Amigos Del Mar's, but i just had to try it...

We actually drill a hold in the top first and take teh juice out. Then we hit with a hammer. As long as it cracks - it is easy to open.

Tip - to taste liek Amigos - we chill ours real well after we open it so it is good and cool, refreshing - like after a dive. Just need the salt air whipping across our faces to really make us feel like we are there.

Enjoy!

Wow, thanks aqtpie! I would not have thought to drill a hole in it, but it was easy. It just took a few twists of a screwdriver and i had punched in a hole.

It taste delicious, but i agree, it would be better with the salty air blowing...

I use an ice pick to punture two of the eyes of the coconut, drain out all the water. Then I wrap the nut in a tea towel or whatever and just slam it on the cement several times...this keeps the nut in the towel and all the pieces usually pop right out or come out real easy with a butter knife...you can also grate it in your blender for the milk or chop it and cook for candy.
