We planned on arriving at the Parrot's Nest on June 20th but are questioning going to the Cayo region at all because of the recent robberies there. Perhaps we should cancel out for a time when things seem safer. Does anyone have recent experience that can give us an honest appraisal of the situation near the Guatamalan border and the Cayo district? Are those isolated incidents or is there real danger for travelers? We don't want to be overly cautious but neither do we want to be accosted by armed gangs! Not a good way to begin a 2 week vacation! Thanks!

There have been some incidents in Cayo lately, but I personally think it is still quite safe, all things considered. There's crime everywhere -- I've had two houses burglarized in North Carolina in the past year or so, in what is considered a low-crime rural area.

The number of incidents involving tourists in Cayo, a handful over the past year or year and a half, is small compared to the number of tourists who had no problem whatsoever. Most people feel entirely safe, just as they probably do back home, though in fact there is crime back home and in Cayo and everywhere.

I've been taking my family to Cayo for the past dozen years or so and I've never had any concern.

I too would not hesitate to visit any of the resorts in the Cayo area; have gone and will continue to do so.
However, I would think twice about going to Tikal any way other than by air. I think I would pass on any cross-border auto traffic between Belize and Guatemala, even in a tourist van. I would stay on the Belizean side of the border, except when flying.

Thanks for the feedback! We are keeping with our plans to stay at Parrot's Nest and see some of the Cayo sights.
