We are flying into Cancun and want to drive into
Belize with a rental car - or hire a driver. Does anyone have any information about this? We've been told that all rental car companies will not allow their cars out of Mexico. All ideas/information welcomed! Thanks.

I have looked into taking a ferry from Tampa to Merida Mexico...now my geography is not very good but I think they are around the same direction of travel. I do not know anything about rental cars but I heard there is a pretty good bus system that will get you from there to the Belize border- which apparenly wont take more than a day.

First some geography help, and second some travel tips.

Merida, Mexico is not on the water, so a ferry can't go there. The place the ferry is most likely to dock is at the port of Progresso, which has a huge pier (6KM long). Progresso is about 45 minutes north of Merida. Merida is a really beautiful city.

How to get to Belize "overalnd" from Cancun -
1. Bus - take first-class - very comfortable and under $20.
2. Car and Driver - Call Menzies Travel in Corozal. 422-4725

This one will let you take across the border however you will be on your own while in this other country: no mechanical assistance will be
