...will be paid by the people of Belize, unless everyone who cares about econological disaster, grand theft on a massive scale and looming bankruptcy does something. Read this:

Read...then DO something. Make a phone call, sign a petition, write a letter or an editorial in your local paper.
(And if you've done it before, do it AGAIN!)

I was horrified to read of the plan and the extent to which wildlife habitat will be threatened with this dam. The project should be refused by the government of Belize...Anyone with connections to the political scene please advise us as to where we can make the most difference?? Maybe if we got some BIG money behind it (Bill Gates) and others we could protect the natural habitiat that is so valuable to all of us? confused

Susangg,,,you go girl!! I have signed the petition, and have supported/contributed to Natural Resources Defense Council and Sierra Club. Yes, the country certainly needs electricity, but isn't there some other alternative source? confused

WE know what corruption, incompetence AND GREED can do. I think we could speak louder by emailing and calling every government agency we can get our hands on. The more emails they get the louder we are.....I feel the strong message on the board about the dogs being poisioned helped in this cause. Hey Lan, or Moose-could you throw us some email addresses up here and we'll give it a shot....as well as signing petitions etc...that's just too much habitat to sell and destroy. When we as humans finally destroy everything, how shall we breathe???? We are literally suffocating ourselves in the name of ourselves!!! Ironic....C

So can anyone out there tell us what the people of Belize want?? Especially the ones who live in and around the area???? Without their voice...this would be hard to have an impact on. I'm wondering since AC and CC don't have dams, but have electricity, then there's GOT TO BE another way???? C

In response to "what Belizians want". I posted my protest on the Belize Audobon Society's website guestbook...they support the dam, interestingly enough confused . I got several heated responses to my post there from Belizians. Several said, (rough quote)"you like to come here and visit one week a year, but you don't have to live here in poverty, without electricity or any other luxuries you enjoy in the United States.". Basically, the gist of the repsonses was that we want to have a high standard of living, (in the US or wherever us tourists come from) but dont' want to support the dam, which, they claim, would put them on the path to a higher standard of living. I didnt' continue the discussion, because I felt that, as a non-Belizian, my input was not really wanted. frown

I'll try to find out what The Nature Conservancy's stand is on the dam. I know they are very active in perserving the reef, and manatees....Maybe they can provide some insight.
