Belizean moviegoers and film buffs will be able
to imagine themselves in Europe, Trinidad, Cuba
or Taiwan for an hour or two, when the Belize
International Film Festival brings a sampling
of independent films from around the world to
the Princess Cinema.
Thirteen films, some of them award-winning at
other festivals in the region, Europe or Asia,
will be presented during the five-day festival
from January 30 to February 3, 2003.A sampling
of these are:
OBorn in Absurdistan', a social satire about
immigration policy in Austria played out
through the story of babies accidentally
switched in the hospital;
'Darkness and Light,' a love story set against
the backdrop of massage parlours and street
gangs in Taiwan;
'The Breakfast Chronicles,' about a Mexican
father who delights his wife by suddenly
returning home after a long absence, but much
to his childrenOs dismay; and 'R-Xmas' an
American film about an upper class family
living double lives as drug traffickers.
The festival will also feature workshops with
special presentations by guests, producers and
directors like Tony Maharaj, the man credited
with the revival of the Indian cinema industry
in Trinidad, and Paola Mercadini who has taught
film in Rome, Mexico, Cuba, headed independent
film companies and helped establish the Latin
American Media Development Agency in, Panama
and Los Angeles.
