Sad word has been received of the death of George Bevier, a pioneer of tourism in Belize. He died January 5 in Belize City of complications of cancer.

Rum Point Inn in Placencia, which George established with his wife Corol, was one of the first beach resorts in southern Belize, the days when few people even knew where Belize, much less Placencia, was.

The hotel was, and is, known for its unusual beachfront accommodations, which look like whitewashed UFOs (later, more traditional units were added), its dive operation and its library of Belize and natural history books, the best hotel library in Belize.

Oh how terrible...
We were guests of theirs a while ago and, gosh... what great people!
Our sincere condolences to Corol and friends.

George is a significant person and personality in the more recent history (something like over 30 years)of Placencia and he will be missed. We, too, were guests at RPI in 1994 and we know him as a force to be reckoned with since that time and to the present.

Rest well, George.
