We are in the process of buying a pick up truck to use in Belize and would appreciate some advice from those of you who are more experienced. When we have rented cars on past visits, we have just used our US drivers licences. Is there a need to get an International Permit when driving a private vehicle? Also we have the option of paying extra for windshield replacement and hurricane insurance. Since the last part of the drive to Placencia is unpaved, I suspect broken windshields may be rather common. Any suggestions? The truck will be stored by the dealer in Belize City when we're in the US. Any thoughts about $300 extra for protection against hurricanes?

Thanks for the help, Chloe. I asked the same question on the Belize Forums and was told by a respondent that it's probably safe to gamble on the windscreen and hurrican insurance and that they've driven in their own vehicles with just US lisences. We'll do the same gamble.
