Friends of the Belize River and Fresh Waters:

The Belize Community Service Alliance is working for the preservation of the Belize River. You may have seen media reports on some of our cleanup efforts in the upper Belize River, Macal and Mopan Rivers. We are currently planning to address the problems of Haulover Creek with our next major campaign.

As you know, Haulover Creek is a critical transportation channel; it also has great potential as a site of interest for the increasing numbers of tourists visiting Belize City every year. Unfortunately, the Creek does not look its best. With the encouragement of concerned citizens ranging from the La Ruta Maya canoe racers to the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), BCSA is determined to clean the Haulover Creek. We also expect to create awareness of the state of our rivers, and to promote fresh water preservation as we beautify the City of Belize for Belizeans and visitors.

The Clean Up of the Haulover Creek will be held Saturday April 12, 2003. Volunteers will gather in boats and on the land to collect trash and remove it; we will also be reviewing the types and sources of waste to develop strategies for reducing this misuse of our River. We have arranged for heavy equipment to remove some of the navigation hazards, especially in the mangroves and shallower areas of the creek.

We are asking you and your staff to support this effort by volunteering in the clean up of the creek bank nearest to you. We also hope that you can make a financial contribution to help with the creek clean up and also with clean up, restoration and preservation of other areas of the Belize Old River.

Businesses donating over BZE$2,500.00, will have their logo featured on our T-shirts, and receive media coverage for their contribution. We hope you will take the opportunity to help the river. We welcome all support, whether volunteer labor, materials, or financial sponsorship.

Thank you,

Luis Garcia

Here is a lead on were to get some money for the Haulover Creek clean up project. RENCO Battery Co. has an acid and lead pit 400 feet from the banks of the Creek. SEE IF THEY CAN DONATE SOMETHING MORE THAN WASTE. eek eek
