The case against the Chalillo project has finally
reached the Privy Council in London. On Wednesday a
three judge panel heard arguments on whether to
grant the environmental group BACONGO an injunction
against further construction on the dam until such
time as the substantive case can be heard on its
merits. In addition to British attorneys, Lois Young
Barrow is also appearing for BACONGO, while
according to reports, Attorney General Godfrey Smith
and Solicitor General Elson Kaseke appeared for the
Belize Government, while Michael Young represented
BECOL. BACONGO is asserting that government's
granting of environmental approval for the hydro
project on the upper Macal River was granted illegally.
