Hey, I'm coming down to Ambergris Caye for the first time next week. A friend told me I should be taking antimalarial pills. Is there a problem with malaria on the Caye? She also mentioned hepatitis. I don't know what to think..Anybody have any advise?

Thanks for the quick response. Its hard to know what to do when medical info is given by the tour group at the last minute. Is the ice and water at most of the restaurants ok to drink as well? Listen to me, I sound like some kind of paranoid hypochondriac and I haven't even left Iowa yet. Thanks for your help.

You should get your Hep A before traveling ANYWHERE in the world.

Might as well get the whole schmeil and go for yellow fever, smallpox, measles and take a couple of malaria proph's. as well, no?

Seriously, you don't really need anything to go to AC. And I've had 'em all and carry my yellow card in my passport. The island's about as safe as you could ever expect out of the US--and probably safer than some places in-country.

I won't argue with Hep A, but if it's only to go to AC, it's not necessary.

I have to disagree with you on that Catatonic. Hep A is one of the easiest spread food borne diseases and its effects are everlasting. Its a problem worldwide, not just in 3rd world countries. If you are under the age of 30 chances are that you have already received it as a mandatory school vacination along with Hep B.

OK, I won't argue that Hep A vaccinations are a good idea. I think they probably are.

However, you are totally incorrect regarding school children. I don't know of ANY school districts that require a Hep A series. None of those I could find on-line list it. Hep B is another story.

Actually, the CDC doesn't even include Hep A in its annual surveys of childhood innoculations and only recommends it for certain regions and areas determined to be high-risk.

Hep A is NOT a common immunization and is certainly not required for the vast majority of children in the US. Maybe it should be, but it's not.

Hep A may not be usual in your part of the country. My kids went to school in the Metro Detroit area, 4 million people in the city and surrounding communities probably makes for higher risk. Hep A and B were both required for high school. 3 daughters, all had to be immunized, we were able to get them thru the county health department.
