Even though I am a smoker I haven't smoked in our house since my son was born 16 years ago. By extension I don't smoke in other houses either. If I won't smoke in mine I'm not going to smoke in yours. I don't like the smell, I don't like the habit and I don't believe in exposing non-smokers to my nasty smoke. So I do my smoking outside by choice and our visitors who smoke do theirs outside also. Like you NYG, we have a few who won't visit any longer, but that's OK.

This is a choice that I make, but to have someone pass a law telling me I can't smoke in my house really ticks me off.

NYgal, you just brought up a memory for me. When I was little, if I could smell cigarette smoke, it meant my dad was around, and that made me feel safe and secure.
I smoked a pipe for awhile, and it seemed the better the particular tobacco tasted, the worse it smelled to others.
My day to quit is this weekend, and then on the patch. I made it a point to do this, and do not intend to become an anti-smoking nazi.
I noticed something yesterday after going through this thread. A CAUTION label on a can of peanuts. "Caution, this product contains peanuts. If you are allergic to peanuts or peanut products, avoid eating the contents." Damn well better be peanuts in that can, it wasn't cheap. Can we assume someone dumb enough to buy a can of peanuts needs a warning? Yup.

my wife, who smokes (quitting too) did a study about 10 years ago on the 10 employees she managed. 3 smokers, 7 non-smokers. She went through 5 years of history on sick days taken. The results were that each of the non-smokers in each year had taken more sick days than all of the smokers put together. Since they had to smoke outside, it wasn't really a second hand smoke thing. One of the girls said "Hell, if I didn't smoke, I wouldn't get any fresh air at all." Interesting.

The current law up here, still allows smoking in drinking establishments . . . inside just not out on the patios, even the rooftop patios . . which I think is just hilarious.

Last summer, a bunch of us were sitting at an outdoor patio and couldn't smoke there. The smokers just went and stood on the sidewalk, on the other side of the waist-high barrier designating the patio, smoking to their hearts content and leaning over the barrier to pick up their drinks.

CrackerLarry, I agree wholeheartedly !

Bobber, Mom and Dad smoked. Both had bypass surgery; Dad twice. They had both quit but too late.
I remember not allowing Mom to borrow my new jacket due to cigarette after smell. I was a teen then. Then I started to smoke....she reminds me of that yet laugh

I worked in the medical field and recollect smoking at work, the smoke curling up around anyone that walked in....strange how times have changed isn't it?

It's all about choice or at least it used to be!

Seashell.....what a hoot smile

Bobber, it can be done. I was strongwilled and wasn't ever going to have someone tell me I couldn't do it, so I didn't tell them I was quitting. They noticed I wasn't joining them for a smoke outside.
I had quit for 4 days before anyone noticed, even at home since he had quit too. Thus my theory of non-smokers don't notice, just the smokers do smile
You both can do it, I have faith smile

My dad had smoked all his life. Had a bypass in his mid 60's and managed to quit after that. He claimed it was easy (yeah, his kidneys shut down, they were late getting him to a facility for dialysis and he ended up in a coma for a month. Never had a cig during that month). He died at 88 Mom never smoked. Died at 88. Mom's mom (gramma) smoked all her life and died about 90. I think it's alot like everything else, genetic susceptibility.
