Hi, I wonder if it is possible to rent a bicycle in Cayo. I would like to see Pacbitun and it sounds a bit far to hike it both ways in one day.

I want to see Caracol as well. Do vans go every day or is it iffy for me showing up alone and hoping to go the next day?

hi there---

you can easily rent a bike by the day or week in san ignacio. i believe it's the guy at pacz hotel who has a sign out along burns st. there may be other rental locations as well, if you ask around. for a week's rental it comes out the same or cheaper to buy a bike, i think. i did a comparison in summer of 2003.

for tours check with mayawalk or pacz tours, inquire at eva's restaurant or hire freelance local guide patrick warrior at 606.7714. he's mighty mighty and may be able to hook you up with other people interested in seeing similar sights

Pacbitun is pretty far & all uphill from San Ignacio. Quite the haul by bike. Where are you staying? Crystal Paradise Resort also rents Mt Bikes from town (Savannah St) or their resort location - which is half the way to Pacbitun! Vans go pretty much everyday to Caracol. CPR offers this tour for a reasonable price as well. I second the recommendation for Patrick Warrior. You can often find him at the new little "mall" downtown SI, or call him at that number above.

Thanks for all the info!

I will probably stay somewhere cheap, such as Hotel Backpackers. Twelve miles each way does not sound bad unless I were walking it as a day trip.

I do so want to get to Caracol this time. The last two times I was passing through were in different Januaries and the road was bad due to rain. This time it will be in February and I understand that the road is improved and being improved even now.

That is good for tourists, but bad for the countryside, due to all the new settlements that will show up along the road.

If you can't get a hold of Patrick, try (Big) J. You can reach him 608-0173! Mayawalk is good for seriously organized tours! Hope you have really strong legs and if you want a clean place in town, Martha's is the place to stay! Or at least buy one of their sesame seed bars!

Think Patrick is now working for Emilio Awe of Pacz tours for caving.
