www.beautifulbelize.com/tradewindshotel. If you want a beachfront cottage but don’t want to pay the higher prices north of the village, Tradewinds is your best bet. The seven pastel-colored cabins on the beach at the south end of Placencia village are cute as a bug’s ear. They’re not large, but at about US$60 in-season, and as low as US$40 off-season, they’re a good value. Fridges, fans and two double beds are standard.

www.parrot-nest.com. Directions: From San Ignacio, take Bullet Tree Falls Rd. about 3 miles. There are hourly buses, or take a collective (share taxi). Ever wanted to sleep in a tree house? Parrot’s Nest at Bullet Tree Falls on the Mopan River, about 3 miles from San Ignacio, can make your dream come true, at a modest price. There are two cute tree houses, plus four cabins, all with outside facilities near the Mopan River. “High adventure at low prices” is the motto here. Most people who stay here really like it. New management has improved the operation. Rates around US$40 double year-round. Meals are also available.
