Does anyone know anything about this development? Is it for real? It looks extremely expensive and speculative. I am concerned that it will ruin Lighthouse reef. Any comments?

Me thinks everyone better enjoy their favorite places in Belize, especially AC and the other cayes because development is starting and coming with a vengence and there will be no turning anything back. Belize does not have the means or the tenacity to stop it. " Money talks and the old bullshit walks ". Let me guess where most of the develpoment and palm greasing money is coming from!!! Right where most of the people on this board come from.

Isn't it funny how when people try to raise money to build a shelter for dogs, or worse yet, people bring pencils from home for school kids, it's hard to make it happen. But open an area for development on the ocean and the money flood gates open!!!!

It's kinda like the drug trade: These kinds of developments wouldn't exist if there weren't demand, mostly from the U.S., for them.

The sad thing is that many if not most of the buyers haven't even been to Belize. It's like the people a couple of years ago who bought timeshares up on North Ambergris over the Internet. I guess these folks just have a dream idea of what life on a tropical island would be like and they take fork over money without even spending a few days checking it out.

There has been ample discussion about this project. Just do a search under Long Caye development. Check out the one dated 7/23/02. That shows that not only people who have not been here support it, but also people from this board who even profess to care about Belize and it's resources who have bought there. Hypocracy at it's best! mad

Not a chance in hell of being completed in the next 10 years and even less if one thinks that it is going to be completed like the developer said it would be

What a shame. There would be a great demand for the medical facility ( especially the psychiatric ward ) for all those people like Scubalady and Munichchick that bought into that "eco-friendly" development bull s**t and tried to convince others what a great idea it is.

Your "gathering" skills are most perceptive. laugh

I have conflicting emotions not knowing whether to feel sorry for the people stupid enough to invest their money in this project frown upset with them because they invest and support a project so destructive to such a pristine part of Belize mad or just down right insulted when they try to convince me that it is a eco-friendly development and insult my intellegence by attempting to do so confused

There's another development going in somewhere around the Sapodilla Cayes in Southern Belize very close to a marine reserve. Is there just NO meaning to the environmental protection laws on the books in Belize??? I suppose not.

Some rinky dink outfit will suck in a bunch of money, make a mess of everything, and sail away into the sunset never looking back at the crumbling eyesore they left behind.

Sapodilla Caye Marine Reserve is out of Punta Gorda in the Toledo District.

"the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve is facing a similar threat in the form of REEFWORLD which is to be built on Tom Owens Cayes. This project would build a 690’ sea wall, (any sea wall means disturbance of the bottom and silt plumes) a bar, restaurant, hotel, bathrooms and an underwater observatory, all on two cayes that have a total area of less than one hectare. This new infrastructure would be built to accommodate up to 1000 visitors per day."

Where will the "1000 visitors per day' come from? How will they get there? Who is the promoter?

The only hope is that so many of these proposed projects never get off the ground. Unfortunately, there are a lot of similar plans out there for many of the small cayes.

Last year at this time, talk was that a floating Casino would be built along the barrier reef in San Pedro. The objection was mainly from San Pedro business's not wanting to see all the tourist on the Casino and not "about town". The very idea of placing a casino on the barrier reef seems like a bad gamble.

Yeah, if one were to take the time and go back and reconstruct all the "blue sky" plans that have been announced in Belize, many with government officials and press releases and all that, you would have a big, big stack of them.

Golf courses, casinos, timeshares, 500-room luxury hotels, airstrips, retirement communities, medical centers. It's amazing how these things get floated, and then nothing is ever heard from them or about them again.

Guess it's the Belize factor.

not just a good thing, but the right thing. I hope the folks of Belize just keep saying "no" to those things that would bring so much harm to their beautiful country.

This one in Toledo seems serious and is for cruise ship passengers.
