While surging this site, I saw a snake - we're planning our vacation here for diving, etc., how and where should I stay away from these things? I cannot even look at a picture w/o freaking out! Please advise. We're celebrating our 30th anniversary, Cozemul, Belize and back to the Tulum area. I doubt if jungle tours will be in my planning if they're in abundance. Please advise.

Many thanks.

Another question - how far is Plaacencia by bus?

You can take comfort that snakes are very rare on the island and non-poisonous.

I believe Placencia from Belize City is about 4 to 6 hours depending on road conditions.

If you are going into the jungle, you are entering the habitat of wild animals of all sorts. While it is unusual to encounter snakes in most wild habitats simply because they are not the sort of animals who tend to make a nuisance of themselves when people are around, it is always a risk. There are all sorts of animals in the jungle and some, such as scorpions, you need to be sensible about avoiding both in the jungle and in your accomodation.

thank you. We're renting a Villa on the Caye which is right on the water. I won't be in any jungle however if we venture into the Maya Mountains, what are my chances of seeing them? What about seeing the Ruins - are they in the jungles?

If you stomp around a rustle bushes the snakes will hear you and slither away. Just move slowly and loudly.

Don't let your fear get in the way of enjoying your vacation.

Of course, if you make a lot of noise you may not get to see any other types of wildlife either.

Tweedybear, go and have a good time. Once you are there you should totally forget smile

I too had the fear and I've been told ...make noise.

I,now, will go barefoot and have no worries.

We were walking down the road one day and saw a green skinny stick in someone's driveway. Hm...not a stick wink It never moved and it's the only one I have ever seen in over 9 years now...and we stay mainland and on the cayes.

Now, the mosquitoes .....no, joking smile Go, have fun and come back to let us know about your trip laugh

Placencia is no more than 4 hours from Belize via the Hummingbird, and less if you drive fast or go the coastal road.

I've been traveling around every nook and cranny of Belize for 15 years, and probably I have seen only about 25 or 30 snakes in the wild, not counting those at the Belize Zoo and elsewhere in captivity. Most of these were crossing a road somewhere. I saw a fer de lance once at de Silva in the Pine Ridge and one time checking in at hotel in Cayo there was a snake at the door, and again near PG one was sunning by the pool at the most upscale hotel in Toledo, but that's rare.

I guess if you were out in the bush all the time or chopping cane in the fields, you would see more.

I'm told there are at least two varieties of snakes on North Ambergris, a kind of small boa constrictor and the black-tailed indigo, but I have not seen them. Neither is poisonous.

We caught about a 6-8 footer by Caribe Island. Hopie's daughter enjoyed meeting him up close and personal.....
I, on the other hand, stayed far far away....
Cheerz!
