Officials from the National Garifuna Council and the National Institute of Culture and History are this week touring Garifuna Communities countrywide. This tour is to source exhibits for the Garifuna Museum in Dangriga. Yesterday, the group was in Dangriga and Hopkins. Later this week they will be in Seine Bight, Georgetown, Punta Gorda, Barranco and Libertad. The team includes Second Vice President of the NGC, Peter Ciego; Chairman of NICH, Yasser Musa and the President of the NGC Belize City Branch, Sebastian Cayetano. In August of 2002, the National Garifuna Council started the construction of the Museum and library with a grant from the Government of Taiwan. The building is nearing completion and should be ready by November 1, in time for this year’s Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations. It was recognized from the start of the project that the grant was not enough to complete the interior of the building and provide the basic equipment for the museum. As a result, alternative sources of funding are being sought from government, as well as from the business community and other sectors.
