FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WAS GIVEN TO SWALLOW CAYE...
Friends of Swallow Caye has received financial assistance from the United Nations Development Program Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Program. During ceremonies this morning, Vice Chairperson of the GEF/Small Grants Program National Steering Committee, Velda Aguet presented the 45 thousand dollar cheque to President of Friends of Swallow Caye, Lionel "Chocolate" Heredia. This is the first disbursement for the "Application of Sound Management for Manatee Protection at Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary Project", for which a total grant of 79 thousand dollars has been awarded. The goal of the project is provide effective on-site management for the Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary to better protect the endangered manatee. This will be done through the construction of a ranger station and training and equipping rangers for the Sanctuary, promoting community awareness through educational outreach to schools and tour guides and the introduction of entry fees for sustaining!
