The last time I was there was back in 1966. At that time it was used as target practice for Navy ships.

But not long ago I saw a special on the Travel Channel and it is now a vacation destination. It looked decent. Shrug

The US Navy bombing range (900 acres) was there from '44 to '03 when they must have finished off all the goats. I stumbled across this place last week with several glossy media reviews. When you start to dig into it gets very interesting. There are precious few places to stay, and the reviews on TripAdvisor are very unusual. Without exception the "highest rated" places have 5 or 6 recent reviews and they are all equally split between "heaven on earth" to "disgusting, bug infested, rude and totally unsafe". Those are the same exact places in the same month. I can't remember seeing anything like it.

Island is 7 miles off Puerto Rico--25 miles long and 4 miles wide at the widest point. Sound familiar?

Oh yeah, just out of curiosity I checked the BZ forums on TripAdvisor, and what is the very FIRST thing I see---"soma151". No doubt who that is, and the same ol' s--t.

Goats are still exploding on the abandoned bombing range in Hawaii. Old unexploded ordnance still lurking everywhere. Better goats than tourists...

I was there 2 years ago, vieques is what puerto rico must have been like 50 years ago, unspoiled beaches of the highest quality, country roads and little developement.with the military gone, the beaches in what was once military bases are unspoiled and gorgeous.find a good guide when you get off the ferry and have him take you around the island.

Now Choo Choo, before you do too much planning, you'd better make sure that they serve those "blue things" there or you might not survive! T.

T,

Been rationed on those because of some "misunderstandings" that have happened after "fueling up". Her Highness has determined that 1 per quarter would be adequate.
