Kra-Z-K Offline
There is a new Youth Program for ages 8-21 starting in San Pedro. Positive extra curricular activities geared towards our youth to keep them busy, learning, and having fun. Classes are Sat or Sun in the afternoons. Many classes are going to be given and already have established an art, digital photography, and wood carving class.

Any of you with ideas or who have children who take classes for fun or summer school, please help generate class ideas. I am volunteering to run one of the classs/activites and would appreciate your ideas.

Thank you Chloe. Yes, great idea for the young ones interested. It sure is an opportunity of a lifetime! Anyone interested in attending should go.

It is just that I am looking for class ideas that can be more than one day long. This is an actual program started by someone in San Pedro and we need ideas for topics that can be taught over several weeks-many months. Please contribute if you can. Thanks.

We'll be there over 2 weekends. I was thinking just a one afternoon event. We have world renowned video camera flyers, pilots and world champion skydivers they could meet. Our group is coming from South Africa, Canada, Poland, Japan, Belize, United States and Australia. They could learn about aerodynamics, physics, aviation careers, competition and teamwork. Yes, I was serious also.

Deacon, thank you for the email. I think the chess club is a great idea for young ones, I do not think they have that. Perhaps chess and checker club(for the even younger ones.)

You have a lot of great ideas for one of the classes I thought about..."arts n' crafts" class. We already have an art class so I have to figure out what kind of art (painting, drawing, etc as I don't want to copy that class.) I was thinking a different craft/art/project each week. One week clay, one week teaching how to make those balloon animals, one week sand art in those jars (thanks to Deacon), plaster hand/foot molds (again thanks to Deacon, that was fun when I was a kid.)

please, all you with children tell me what activities they enjoy or what classes they take for summer school.

Hey Kra-Z-K, what about beach glass, seed pod and shell mosaics, or making Gel Fragrance Jars (air freshners made with knox gelatin and scented oil).
The kids could 'clean up' the beach picking up pieces of glass (polished smooth by the waves), seed pods and shells and then incorporate them into a picture. Or perhaps the stained glass place would give you the small pieces of no use to them that could be used. Now, because the stained glass & even the beach glass could be dangerous, you may want to restrict it to the older ones.
You can also check out About.com they have lots of ideas for Crafts, Creative Writing for Teens, Sports, etc

At the top of this thread, you said you were volunteering to run one of the classes....what is your area of expertise? (When you worked in the real world) and how could that experience be translated into something worthwhile to the youth of AC?

Maybe a video/drama club? If you have access to a video camera the kids can write a play and make a short film out of it.
Or a sewing class? Or a conservation/enviromental class..learn about the reef, pollution, wildlife, a field trip?
I like the "business" class idea. They could learn to budget money, maybe local business people could come and speak to them or they could visit their business.
Poetry, reading, book club?
Just some random thoughts

I agree, historically, DP, but a plethora of postings (read albums) on the board would be best served,IMHO, by posting to one's online album site.

The point being, which was unsaid, but I thought understood, that an overabundance of photos would slow down the page loading, thereby depriving us of vital minutes in reading your outstanding verbiage, wit and wisdom.

Windjammer – the licker sounds more like my black lab named Negrita (called Grita). I call her the bar bitch as she will go anyplace, with anyone anytime and come home happy, innocent and as sweet as can be.
Pepito (called Pepe) is smaller and looks like a golden lab only smaller. If he didn’t try to chase you away and actually licked you then you must be some special person. Either that or you gave him some chicken bones.

Keli and a number of other people somehow got some bad information and showed up at various places today. We were all supposed to meet back at the medical school at noon today. I got there at 1:00 (golf cart problem) and they had this huge stack of forms all filled out by the kids.
I’m in total shock; 50 kids signed up for my photography class. They talked me into teaching two classes, back to back. We are going to put only 12 kids in each class. One will be for 8 through 12 year olds; the other will be 13 and over.
As of today I have commitments for 5 cameras. Obviously we can use more.
Classes start next Saturday. I sure could use some help.

I have been asked to assist with the fundraising for the youth program. The Gov. General program has made a list of materials needed as many prefer to donate materials vs. money.

The kids were SO excited yesterday about having classes and things to do on the weekends. All of the children in my class expressed how bored they are on the weekends and want to learn new things.

Below is the list of items needed, if anyone is interested contact me or PM me for the contact info of the director of the program if you prefer to donate directly to him.

Donations of items needed are greatly appreciated as well as cash to purchase the items. The list of items needed is as follows:

1) Books, pamphlets, brochures or any literature on: Acting, Music, Arts, Crafts, Landscaping and Lawn Care, Chemistry, Instrument Care, Drumming, Photography, Journalism, Woodcarving and Sculpture, Creative Jewelry, Public Speaking, Poetry, Song Writing, Exterior or Interior Design, Civil Affairs, Local History, Dancing or Marching Bands.

2) Eraser for paper and film, all purpose liquid paper, scissors, pens and pencils, rulers, dry markers, easels, all sorts of paper, bristle boards, wood strips, water and juices, glue, a scanner, a printer, a desktop or laptop computer, notebooks, graph paper, miter saw, dust masks (disposable), eye protection glasses, plastic cups, 5-gallon water bottle, an electric drill, a saw, a tape measure, bits, screwdrivers, extension cords, old magazines, 90 degree metal angle, chisels, white boards, paint, canvas, rubber bands, fabric, multi-color cold dyes, red food coloring, baking soda, vinegar, markers, digital cameras, wood for carving, sewing machine, electric pianos, guitars, recorders, drums, violins, harmonicas, tennis balls, tapes and adhesives, water colors, shovels, machetes and rakes.
