Miami Judge Fines the Government of Belize:

Wednesday, 13 April 2005 Ursula Ungaro-Benages (United States District Judge) fined theGovernment of Belize (GOB) US$50,000 a day beginning March 29, 2005and will last until the GOB complies with her orders. Under U.S. law,this fine runs through weekends and holidays, bring the total amountowed to date (April 13, 2005) to US$750,000. The Judge has orderedthe GOB to pay the amount due by April 22, 2005. The fines willcontinue on a daily basis and, if the GOB doesn't participate in ameeting of the BTL board of directors called for this coming Monday(April 18), those fines will continue to increase. Furthermore, theUrsula Ungaro-Benages also ordered the GOB to pay Belize Telecom'sand ICC LLC's attorneys' fees and expenses caused by the GOB'scontempt.
