Had THE BEST coffee in the UK, tasted the exact same in every city I went to. Thought that was very funny. Everyone made it in a little individual server thing called a Cafeteria ? or something like that. Twas very fine indeed.

I expect the uniformity in taste comes from a practice started in Medieval times, where the water from the river Thames was shipped and used exclusively throughout the country for this and many other purposes.

jealous to you, law. we got the kids this weekend, but last weekend was our fun one: fri night in bed right after work & didnt get out for 24 hours. then we went out to very romantic dinner and ketel one kamikazis saturday then to see the pretenders(showing my age)in atlantic city sunday in a venue with a BAR and SMOKING ALLOWED (like the old days). it rocked!

I keep telling you, woman, we do NOT percolate our coffee - the freshly ground brew is on - this morning we are using the drip method.

I'll be right there guys! I need an extra strong brew this morning. Last night I let my dogs in right before bed, only to find that they'd had a close encounter with Pepe la Pew. My entire house smells like skunk. After a bath with a mixture of peroxide, baking soda, water and dish soap, the dogs are tolerable.

Glad you're not coming to my house for coffee this morning! It might be a little odiferous for ya'll. Now I need to do a search and find out how to get the smell out of my carpets.

personally, my flavored coffee of choice, if I were drinking a flavored variety would be hazelnut - never tried Pepe la Pew and probably won't!

Tomato juice will work on the animals ( including we mortals) but don't think I'd try that on the carpet.

Haven't had that first cup yet although, I can smell it from here! She brewed the coffee... should I have her fix me a cup as well? Little sugar (not that fake stuff!) and a little cream! I said little dadgumit!

1. I have now looked up the official definition of percolate:
percolate - permeate or penetrate gradually;
while that may be fine for some things, it's not the way to treat coffee - so you guys knock it off!

2. It's now after 2 am California time and TQ and I are just gettin in - Fresno will never be the same! Coffee service tomorrow am will be slightly delayed!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant segue. No one has addrressed the part of the coffee preparation process where the super heated liquid travels along a tube and empties into waiting grounds. this process is repeated again and again with the old school method of perking coffee, with the drip method, it's only one time and it's done. Personal preference I presume.

Ahh, perhaps true DP. Personally, I drip one full cup at a time, nurse it and then repeat the process until fully satiated.

As for the brewing debate, yes, DP, it is a matter of personal preference. Personally, I prefer the vacuum method:
A vacuum brewer consists of two bowls, one sitting directly on top of the other. The bottom bowl — the carafe — contains water, the top bowl contains the ground coffee. When the water boils, steam forces it into the top bowl, where it mixes with the grounds. When the air in the carafe cools and contracts, it forms a vacuum that draws the liquid, now coffee, through a filter that keeps the grounds aloft. They make exceptionally hot coffee and have a brew cycle that's within the ideal range. Tasters consistently describe it as strong and robust.

Now THAT methodology is intriguing.

Might as well give it up L, and get it going.....sleep is off the table for today!

Ahh back from the dentist. Twas on the plane home from Vegas, happily chomping on my carrots (w/Bloody Mary; best da*m pairing of food and booze available, but that's another thread) when I noticed a bit of pressure in one of my teeth. I thought a bit of carrott was stuck between my teeth. WRONG! My tooth cracked in half! And I swallowed it! OMG....so today was the final 'seating' of the crown. Thank goodness. Da*n dentist threw the age card at me: your tooth cracked in half..it happens when we get older.

I'm not keeping strange hours, for me. You are keeping strange hours for you. There used to be a time when you were still up when I was up. Now it seems you are going to bed early all the time. Must be hanging out with that young crew's got you all worn out.

SS - my sleep pattern (among other things) has been severely disturbed - it's better now - we'll chat at the usual time!

mal, it's a bite guard to protect your teeth from grinding when you sleep and sometimes even when you are awake. (grinding weakens them, can cause them to wear down and/or break)

dentist made me a bite guard few years back - I ground right through it!

Mayonnaise Jar and Two Cups of Coffee

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and two cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the liquid into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favourite passions -- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car. The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "There is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you."
"So... Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

So, the practical philsophy is to take time to smell the coffee.
