Today on the Southern Highway at approx. Mile 15 (south of Maya Center, next to Red Creek Nature Reserve Property) on the west side of the highway in a ditch we noticed a very large animal carcass that the vultures were picking at (this is what caught our attention). We stopped and walked down the embankment and there was a dead Tapir with its hind legs cut off. We did not look to see if it was shot but it did not appear to be a "road kill" (if it WAS a road kill I am sure whoever hit it would have received major damage to their vehicle and/or themselves). No damage to the body other then its hind quarters very neatly cut off leaving the tail in the center. This was a very sad sight. On numerous occasions I have reported fisheries/hunting/ enviornmental violations but have received no input from the "proper" authorities. Maybe someone on this forum knows how to better deal with this info.

It might easily have been a road kill and then someone cut the hindquarters off to eat. Why leave it for the vultures? If it was shot you would have not seen the carcass, it would be being eaten. Just my opinion.

Being a fan of road kill myself, I would have to agree with Dave.
