I think it should be legalized, and controlled, like alcohol. The Gov. would reap big $$ from taxing it. Plus, you would hopefully know it wasn't dusted with something else. (unless you WANT it dusted with something else!) Have had some in my youth that kicked my tail...for days. Would never wish that on anyone!

Wow, didn't think there would be that much disparity? Small sample, though.
Wonder if demographics: age, male/female, resident/vistor/LT vistor/native, etc. are as diverse?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! NO WAY!!!
I have two nephews that grew up without their dad because of drugs. Now my brother is trying to make it up to them now, a decade or two, too late. I had a cousin who took his own life at age 20 in 1979 because of drugs. He hung himself in the closet. My aunt had to cut him down.

I'm so sorry your family has had such a difficult time, ArtZ. I think almost all of us can identify with you on that level. But, I can almost guarantee the things that have happened to your family were not because of marijuana. Perhaps the harder drugs, but weed is very quiet, issues are not enhanced, the most you would do is eat yourself into a coma, or laugh yourself into a stupor. If it is laced with stronger stuff, such a thing can happen, but it is pretty rare. If you are prone to trying to get that elusive buzz, you might go for the stronger stuff. Legalizing weed wouldn't do anything to further or limit that from happening. If someone wants to get the big guns, they will, and the government's control of weed wouldn't stop them.

Here in Oregon, with a medical marijuana permit, one is licensed by the state to grow. You can have 6 large flowering adult plants, 13 smaller plants (under 1 foot), and can possess up to 24 ounces dried. the police, doctors, courts, etc all got together and rewrote the bill a couple years ago and it passed in a popular vote of the state. http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/ommp/ http://www.voterpower.org/ you cracked me up bigtime bearfoot gibby...

Thanks Marty, I have been subjected the rants and raves of anti pot alarmists for years who start the day with their legal pain pills, chased by their legal muscle relaxers, then get home and drink their legal cocktails mixed with their legal antidepressants. I don't understand why when it comes to marijauna and hemp that they can't see clearly enough to "Legal Eyes" it.

I have mixed feelings regarding this subject..especially after my step son killed a lady while he was driving stoned from weed. If it is legalized, I think it should be like alcohol.....do what you want at home.....but do not use it and drive! Unfortunately this policy does not work for booze...but it is a step in the right direction. My friends may think they have a right to have a joint or a drink...but I also have a right.......to travel safely on roads.

I have literally been around the world and I can honestly say... without hesitation for all of its' faults, the United States is by far the best country in the world to live... period. Sure we have our faults... no one or no country is perfect... Sure we have some goofy leaders, but look around the planet and tell me one that isn't? You can't... And some of these leaders are brutal as hell towards the people they are supposedly representing. Having said that... Have I smoked pot? Yes, of course I have, but I didn't inhale it... but I held my breath as long as I could and finally had to give in and breathe it all in... I didn't want to breath it in but then for some reason the people around me became more tolerable. Have I tried other ummmm brain enhancing drugs? No... after my experience with pot I found out that I was looney enough and didn't need any help along the way. And believe me this was all taking place in the 60's and 70's. Now all the people that agree with me, stand over to my right... the people that disagree to the left. Maybe after a few more tokes you can fall, trip or stumble to the right or the left. And I don't want to see anyone disagree with me on here... cause why? It doesn't make a flying you know what. In the scheme of things of reality... it doesn't matter... if it did, you would be sitting in Washington or someplace making laws... I forget... legalize it and move on...

Simon, I dont think our neighbors to the north can be bullied by anyone. If our neighbors to the south could be bullied we would not be building a fence to keep illegal aliens and other "stuff" out.
I will not respond to that sleeze ball that lives under a rock.
Back to the subject, using weed or anything else is a decision we each make and is of no concern to me what so ever.

For those that don't know, as countries go, Canada and the US are like brothers. Canada may be the slower, less aggressive, less sophisticated, somewhat retarded runt brother, but they're still brothers. It IS a wonderful place to live, and I wouldn't trade it for anything (ceptin' maybe San Pedro.... ) I have no problem with pot being legalized for medicinal use, nor do I have a problem with pot being decriminalized. The End.

Ozarks said: "my step son killed a lady while he was driving stoned from weed. If it is legalized, I think it should be like alcohol.....do what you want at home.....but do not use it and drive!"
seashell says: legalized or not, it is illegal to drive while impaired and that means whether on alcohol or pot. Currently, alcohol impairment can be measured and legally impaired is at .08 BAC(at least here at home). How they will make a determination as to how stoned a person is or is not on pot, I dunno.
Maybe it will depend on how many cheese doodles are laying on the floor of the car.
That said, my vote . . um, what, um, . . . where are my cheese doodles?
Just kidding, I don't do it but I'm for legalization.

Re: Legalize weed?

oh boy, i have been quietly on this soapbox for years. i know folks who do and who do not.
i rarely drink and i think alcohol is by far the most dangerous and abused drug out there. you all think it is no big deal. i do. but i dont tell folks to criminalize it. nor do i shun you for it.
why do some people have to include all drug abusers ruining their (or their loved ones)lives to reflect the effects of pot? that is like saying someone drinking a glass of wine at night is equal to someone who drinks 2 quarts of tequila each day.
i do not believe in driving under the influence of ANYTHING. that said, most of us have done it at least once in oour lives.
i do not believe dope has caused ANY deaths, unless you can prove it. people get killed in car accidents everyday, with no drugs associated. some people are just lousy drivers, fiddle with their radios or cell phones, yell at their kids. should we make those things illegal, since they all cause auto deaths? infidelity destroys families all the time, but no one even thinks to put a fine on that. our society accepts it as "the way it is".
no laugh to moderation, either. no laugh at all. dessert is great. but if you eat 5 daily, you will be fat. the warm sun feels wonderful on vaca, but sit in it all day for a year and you will most likely get skin cancer and/or look 90. a little eye make-up looks fab on me, but too much & i look like a hooker.a belgian unfiltered beer is terrific to unwind after a long week, but a case will put you on your ass. a case a day will end up destroying your family and liver. so, whoever laughs at moderation, think again.
i am with S&S, do it up like alcohol or tobacco, have the govt regulate & tax the **** out of it. no one under 18 or 21 should be allowed to buy. most should be happy to pay for the alternative of not getting busted, or having to deal with questionable people to obtain it, and organized crime and street shootings will decline. revenue will increase.
i am a product of the 70's, and have seen & tried a lot of stuff. that doesnt mean i do it. dope is not heroin. or coke, or even a bottle of whiskey. i have seen several very successful business people, parents, REPUBLICANS, tax-paying and otherwise law abiding citizens partake socially over the years. none of their lives were ruined nor have they shot anyone or committed vehicular homicide. in fact, they are productive parts of society.
let's see those statistics for alcohol realted deaths & divorces compared to marijuana ones, please??? oh, JMHO.

One out of every three drivers in the US will be involved in a alcohol related driving accident during their lifetime.
Traffic fatalities in alcohol-related crashes fell by 2.4 percent, from 17,105 in 2003 to 16,694 in 2004. Although this is definitely an improvement, it is still a lot of dead fellow citizens. To put this in perspective, it is equivalent to a fully loaded Boeing 747 crashing, and leaving no survivors, every nine days all year long – over 39 airplanes in total.
The 16,694 fatalities in alcohol-related crashes during 2004 represent an average of one alcohol-related fatality every 31 minutes.
NHTSA estimates that alcohol was involved in 39 percent of fatal crashes and in 7 percent of all crashes in 2004.
In 2004, 21 percent of the children age 14 and younger who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were killed in alcohol-related crashes.
An estimated 248,000 people were injured in crashes where police reported that alcohol was present — an average of one person injured approximately every 2 minutes.

cop pulls a mellow stoned guy in a car over. cop says "son, do you know how fast you were going?" "no officer. i'm sorry. what did i do?" "son, you were doing 25 in a 45 zone".
ok, so it's not funny, but you get the jist. thanks for the back up and statistics, friends. (hey rykat, any comments?)
now, looking at the stats, why does this issue get so much negative press and no support? i think cuz the govt set it up so that anyone who thinks this way will most likely be under scrutiny, so no one will speak up. JMHO

I've seen both sides of that. I guess it depends on what kind of work ethic one has. I knew one guy that didn't smoke, and just drank a little. Lazy butt-head didn't want to work. Then I've seen one guy that took a few hits off a joint before he started work (home repair job) and worked like a mad man. He had his "smoke" breaks, but he did (and still does) wonderful work. He takes pride in his work. Like I said, depends on what kind of intestinal fortitude a person has.

Most places you loose your driver's license for a year - like that keeps people from driving! I'm a strong proponent of forfieture laws, get caught driving under the influence of alcohol, loose your car - now that might keep some of them off the street. Won't necessarily keep them from harming themselves, but will seriously cut down on the harm they do to others. Of course, we'll never see that, because by and large this country DOES turn a blind eye to alcohol. Oh, and "I only drink a little" ? Being a little drunk is like being a little pregnant. One drink impairs. That said, I'm a huge fan of drinking! Just don't get behind the wheel of a car after you've had a couple. Ok, that's my rant - I'm off to fix a margarita!

Read the book REEFER MADNESS by Eric Schlosser...fascinating (hic - had to add that one to lighten things up a bit) This is the same guy that wrote FAST FOOD NATION. An excellent read no matter what side of the fence one is on.
One of my cop buddies who is all for legalizing weed said that full legalization will never happen until impairment(motor vehicle operation and such) can be measured. Decriminalize it for sure yes as is in the case in a few places. No reason to rot in jail and get butt-reamed for having a spliff.

DCG....second-hand shops in Manhattan, specifically the East Village....if you cannot find bitch boots there then I suggest a trip to Paris? Pucci, Gucci, Comme de Garcons - a woman in Comme de Garcons (pants/shirt) with nice boots (vintage)? Deelish. EAst village for a couple of days will make you feel righteously female. Is this gay or just appreciative of a put-together broad? Don't bogart that joint my friend.

so weird you should say that. it's been my nickname since high school & my email for at least 10 yrs. last year we were walking thtu this ancient town in turkey. old stone houses falling down and ruins everywhere.
then, i stop bruce and said "listen!!!". he didnt really know the song...but the opening notes were playing from a short distance away. two old men drinking had a radio on, and in the middle of freaking turkey, i said "OMG, that's my song!!!" i tried to tell the men, but they spoke no english. so, we ended up drinking wine & coffee with them, and whooping it up laughing for an hour or more, gesturing wildly as we totally couldn't understand each other. except two words, used together "Bush...Bu%#$hit".
so, that's my cbjunkies sweet jane story. the end.
