Belize, Maya Breeze Seeing Busier Summers

While Belize is a welcome oasis for northerners once the snow flies, this western Caribbean hot spot is seeing an increase in "off season" visitors as well, vacationers who come down during the summer months.

One reason is that there is no off-season for the activities that can be enjoyed here. So more diving and fishing enthusiasts, for example, are taking advantage of lighter crowds and more attractive accommodation rates that can generally be expected in the summer and early fall compared to the winter months.

Whale sharks are a big draw to southern Belize off the coast of Placencia. While sightings are never guaranteed, they are typically highest late spring-early summer, when cubera snapper fish spawn, attracting whale sharks.

Tressa and Buddy Olson, who own and operate Maya Breeze Inn on Placencia Peninsula, point out that Belize can actually be cooler than many areas of the southern U.S. during the summer. "Our temperatures tend to peak in the 80's during the day, tempered by a cool breeze off the ocean" says Tressa. "Water temperature is perfect for snorkeling and diving, and our guests usually enjoy little to no crowds at restaurants and on tours during the summer."

The Maya Breeze Inn is located on Maya Beach, in the narrowest part of the peninsula. Just off the beach is False Caye that has coral heads and an abundance of reef fish that make for great snorkeling. Two miles south of Maya Breeze Inn is Seine Bight, a small Garifuna Village.
