Trick question:
You are a captain of a Boeing 747, going from Los Angeles to London, with 351 passengers and 18 crew on board, and during take-off one of your engines catches fire... what would you do?

A. Turn the plane around and make an emergency landing.

B. You radio the LAX control tower, to inform them that you will try to "get as far as you can" and later perform an emergency landing in Manchester.

Live and let live

Boy, I hope all those passengers were clueless - can't imagine being on a flight that long knowing one of the engines was gone eek

I think I would have downed every alcoholic drink I could get my sweaty, shaking palms on and hopefully passed out before it crashed! I was having a hard enough time a week ago leaving Dallas in a rain storm! Call me a "white-knuckle flyer!"

It is not at all uncommon for aircraft to fly with inoperable or broken systems among other problems. You, as a passenger, don't have a clue about what is not working on the aircraft. The 747 has 4 engines. It can fly with just 1. The people on the plane paid to go to Manchester. The plane could fly to its destination. It may sound extreme but it happens and you just don't hear or know about it. That's why the pilot gets the big bucks, to make an informed decision. Afterall, he's a passenger too.
No matter where you go ... There you are!
