I have read and reread the many pages posted about buying real estate in San Pedro area. I see a wide range of prices and styles. I'm certain that I want to be on the edge of town. I see from your posts that a number of you are getting ready to build. That sounds like asking for a lot of problems and work.
I would love to read the reasoning each of you used to make your decision either way.

Simple, if you can't find what you want where you want it, build it. If you can and you can afford it, buy it. Building there is no worse than in the US, it just takes longer. However, you have less bureacuacy and retarded inspectors to deal with. The real success is in finding a good project manager to get it done or a good real estate person to deal with. If you expect to accomplish either on less than "island time" you will be disappointed.

Hi Scuba Lady, sounds like you are hot to build or buy. I built a nice little house about 25 miles north of AC 5 years ago and I loved it. Build with blocks and cement flat roof catch your own water, put it in your below ground cistern, pump it out with a 12volt shurflo pump run by solar panels on the roof. I had solar power backed-up by small dsl. gen, propane gas refrig., a 2,500 watt inverter powered by 8 golf cart batteries. The solar array I set up would float (fully charge) the bats by 2:00 pm.
The house was laid out with a large bedroom on each side, kitchen and dining/bar/liv in the front facing the beach. Equipment room that housed the pump, bats, freezer,(yes a small one set up on a timer) BBQ (gas), small reverse osmosis water purifier, and shelves full of everything you need in paradise. If I knew how to draw on this machine I would give you the layout. Or I can be a reasonable consultant!
I still have a lot on the north end of the Cay, above rocky point, that I dont know If I can afford to build on. I'll make you a deal if you have the real desire to be way away from the masses in town.

Bud
Thanks for your input and offer.
Actually I want to be on the edge of town. Although I am retiring I'm not a retiring person. I have a million things I want to do and look forward to having the time to do them.
I bought a lot on Long Caye at Lighthouse Atoll. I'll use that as a base camp for diving, but I need to be where there is some action.
Sounds like you have a nice set up. Good for you.
