specv Offline
First post to the forum, I've lurked now since Mitch.

My mom just moved into a new home south of SP. In a recent e-mail I hear of her current opportunity.

"We have a bat problem here. They hang upside down outside of my windows and eat almonds and poop on my windows. Any suggestions for getting rid of them would be appreciated."

My response was to be glad she is making for less mossies laugh

I sent her several links for bat houses, but I think her goal is to make her home less friendly to the bats.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Jeff

We have a lot of bats here in Austin, the Mexican freetail type. A lot of them live under one of our historic bridges traversing the colorado river which runs through the middle of town, but lots of people in nearby neighborhoods have bat houses on tall poles. The bats love them and they keep their yards virtually mosquito free during the buggy season. They eat tons, literally, of mosquitos and other flying bugaloos. If you put a bat house in your yard, but away from the house, they would probably take up roosting there. I don't have the specifics, but there are some good bat house books around.

Absolutely! Don't get rid of them. Just relocate them...LOL Their droppings are also some of the best fertilizer known to man!

Here's a link on bat conservation:

i think i would live with the bat guano (sp) (droppings) on the window sills if they are dining on pesky skeeters. cool

Sure....just put in a window flower box and let it drop right in...LOL smile
How much easier can gardening get? wink

Sure beats the $1200 US for one of those mosquito machines too.

Bats eat bugs. That is good.
Bat guano on the other hand, is not user-friendly. When bat-guano turns into dust it is deadly if inhaled in "significant" amounts - not a problem outside your house - but deinfitely an issue in an attic or a cave.

Mothballs will make them move out.
They don't like the smell.
Use a loy of them .. maby 10 pounds in a attic.
Got this from an exterminator, tried it and it works.

depending on what kind of cooling system you have, the moth ball smell will get sucked into your house and become very annoying. frown
keep the bats smile
