from a friend...

I just had a conversation with someone here in Placencia that makes be
believe that BTL's problem has something to do with their attempt to
install spam filters. We think that BTL is working to and from BTL
addresses ONLY. The problem occurs when someone in a domain other than
BTL tries to send or receive email to or from a BTL domain account.

Obviously, there are ways to work around this for people who have full
Internet service AND the know how to bypass the problem. But, as I've
indicated previously, there are a lot of people who only have BTL email
accounts OR who have full Internet accounts but don't understand the
work-around.

I just called our Tourism Office here and asked them if they could try
to provide assistance to the small hotels and other businesses in
Placencia who only have BTL email service. (I've received numerous
emails from people in the States and Canada who have told me that
they've been trying to reach specific properties with BTL.net addresses
and are getting no response from any of them.

This is a problem that ultimately affects the entire country, even those
of us who have the cash and/or the know-how to deal with the problem in
one way or another.

As an problem affecting Belize's very important tourism industry, THE
GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BECAUSE, IF FOR NOTHING
ELSE, IT'S AFFECTING THEIR BOTTOM LINE - forget the responsibility of
government to protect and serve their citizens - JUST LOOK AT THE BOTTOM
LINE!!!!! (IS ANYBODY OUT THERE LISTENING?????????)

BTL needs to start acting like a business - get the damned server fixed
NOW or get another one!!!!! And don't complain about the high cost of
duty, or shipping time, or any other drivel, fly somebody to wherever
they need to go to get a new server AND fly as many skilled technicians
back to Belize as are necessary. BTL is already in breach of contract
with every single Internet subscriber in this country, as well as the
government under the terms of its license. BTL NEEDS TO BE HELD
ACCOUNTABLE!!!!! (HELLO, HELLO - OH, OF COURSE NO ONE IS LISTENING,
THEIR PHONES AND EMAIL ACCESS DON'T WORK, FANCY THAT.)

Yeah - it has been really horrible the last few weeks. Will put me (and others) out of business if we have to call Belize for every availability check, reservation, cancellation, question, etc. I can only get through to those hotels with satelite service and those are few and far between. My rep on the island has been working overtime calling & going to the various hotels for me! Must be a nightmare for the hotels - who knows how much business is being lost???

I am having serious problems here in San Pedro as well. I use either yahoo or hotmail and never know if my mail is being sent or if I receive all mails sent to me. My phone bill is getting out of hand, since there are a couple of people I absolutely have to stay in touch with in the States right now. I gave my e-mail address on this board for people who want to support the new music school and I am being told my e-mail doesn't work. It is bad indeed!

When BTL reps were asked point blank if they are making a specific block on all Starband communication, they answered yes. This has been the case for months.
BTL's soccer team is called "The Bandits" - coincidence?

Well, since yesterday evening I've noticed just about double the spam on my btl address; perhaps the new system is working!!

Another great way to get rid of spam for btl: stop listing the email addresses. Just a thought.

BTL has shot themselves in the foot again. Maybe for the last time? The new kids are/will soon be on the block. :p

Barb,
That's one reason why some hotels have chosen to run the reservation departments from the US. When I'm in the States, its my job to do all reservations for Caribe Island, and when I'm in Belize, I have hired someone here to handle it. It does cost alot to train someone here in the States, but it's better than losing money when mess like this happens. Our 800 number comes right here, (unlike the 800 service offered by the Belize Hotel Assn, which we have found to be totally ineffective).
Sure hope the problem is handled soon.
Cheerz,
Vicki
