Water water everywhere and not a fresh fish in sight!

We were down for several days recently and wanted to buy some fresh fish - as suggested we went to the lagoon side at the back of town at about 8.30 a.m. one day and all we found was one fish stall selling not very much at all.

All the restaurants and hotels get fresh fish from somewhere (well, I assume it is fresh) - Were we just unlucky? Did we go at the wrong time? Did we go to the wrong place?

Please tell us the secret for future trips - I can only eat so much pasta in tomato sauce!

Thanks

You were in the right spot. Somedays the catch is good and that means lots of fish for sale, other days it's not a good catch and therefore not so much filet to buy. Try again and maybe a bit earlier in the am - 7:30.
Thunderbolt also has fresh fish.
Fresh-frozen filets are almost always available at The Greenhouse and are excellent.

7:30AM? When do the fisherman fish? At night? 3 in the morning? Or is this fish from the previous day? Just curious.

The fishermen tend to grab a cup of coffee together at 4:30 am, and reach their fish-traps at first light. It's easy to be back by 7:30.

Ahhh, fish traps, that explains it. I was thinking handlines. Thanks.

Thanks everyone -that is very helpful!

With the jetlag from the UK, getting from our place at Buena Vista to town by 7.30 a.m. will be rather easy! Meeting someone for a drink at 9 p.m. tends to be more difficult and involves match sticks to keep the eyes open!

Just make friends with any of the fishermen/guides and they'll be more than happy to help you out... Walk down to Cholo's on the reef side and watch them clean fish.. They are usually happy to sell you a couple...

and the other possibility is to catch them yourself... sit on any of the piers that allow fishing and catch a couple early morning or late night...
