Hi can any one tell me if they have drilled a well on the north end of the island and whatis the cost. Hope to see about building soon and need a little info. Also what about a building permit cost and time to receive one. Thanks
The supply of water from wells on the North side varies a lot in both quantity and quality.
On our site (Beuna Vista) the water is only about 6-8 feet down and we have two wells dug (not drilled) but the water is really only usuable for watering plants and washing the patio areas. Elsewhere further north the water is good enough to use in toilets and, I understand, for washing.
So it depends where you are and what you want the water for.
Thanks Nick for the info our land is at Mata Grande.Ive never paid any attention to water supply in the area and wasnt sure how to get a well but digging would make scense. Im just in the planning stages of building lots of questions and hoping not to sound to stupid, again thanks Danny
Is this well for the concrete mix for construction or are you looking for household water supply? We never got much good water out of our wells so we covered them up after the building was done. Just used them to mix the concrete. Now we have a 37,000 gallon rainwater cistern under the house. You can never have too much water. I would go with as large a cistern as you can manage.
Cistern size should be proportionate to the buiding size. IE:If you have a 50,000 gallon cistern under a 30 x 30 house it will take 2. 8 years to fill it at 36" of rain a year average assuming you never use it.
Hey Nick what what type of house did yall build. I have come to realize we'll will to old to enjoy belize if we wait until we can afford a concrete house ,so we have decided to build a wooden structure. We seem to have gotton a good price from the mendonite builders. Dan
My old house had 18,000 gallons capacity. The house had a roof area of 1280 square feet. We could have filled it 4 times a year...we never went below 1/2 full even in the driest dry season. Of course, the lavatory and garden were supplied from a well and later from the BWS city water.
Rainfall in San Pedro is generally more than 50 inches a year.
Afraid we went for a big heavy concrete one in the hope that it will not blow away!
We put two cisterns underneath with total capacity of circa 28,000 gallons (the house has 4 bedrooms with beds for 8 and the well water is not useable for the lavatories).
I must admit I was surprised how quickly the cisterns filled up last November/December - it seemed to take only a few good downpours to do the job!
