I know you will all be avid readers of the publication Fish Farming International but in case you have missed your copy of the April addition it announces that Marine Farms ASA of Norway has reached agreement with the Belizian authorities to start farming Cobia in the waters 15 kms off shore south east of Belize City.

This apparently involves putting out in the ocean cages of 70 -100 metres circumference in which to grow the fish.

Should make them easy to catch!

It is amazing what they are trying to farm these days. Cobia and other predator type fish are harder to farm because they have a tendency to eat each other leaving only a few big fish at the end of the season. You have to keep them all really close to the same size or else the smaller ones start to disappear.

Just find out where they are dropping the cages. You do know how to dive, don't you?

There is only one cure for baldness. It was invented by a Frenchman. It is called the guillotine.

Take it from someone who's broke their wrist and 3 ribs thanks to a big cobia. It's not a fish you want on the end of a spear!

It's a long way from the water to the table. You planning on diving down and catching one with a fork?

Hmm..can I just ask. We are constantly advised (in Europe) not to eat farmed fish and to only eat wild fish from sustainable sources. Apparently fish farms cause a lot of enviromental damage. This occurs partly through chemicals and hormones given to the fish which is ingested by other fish and also because the high density of fish on the farms leads to disease which spreads to wild fish locally. Reports in the UK have said that the next 'BSE' is likely to be from farmed fish, particularly as organophosphates (legally or not) are used excessively to control parasites. People might think I am a 'bunny hugger' type, but I try to eat meat from sustainable stocks and research my sources to ensure that they are not damaging my environment so that I can eat meat. I didn't eat meat for 20 years for this reason. I would be interested in what people think about the potential risks posed by these farms. I think there is a slightly different attitude in the USA, but I read the paper today and most schools in London (UK) are now insisting on only feeding children organic food for just these reasons. All views welcome.
