I guess this is the appropriate area for this question..
I had heard that a private High School had opened in the Medical School (south of town). At the time I asked, it was not an acredited school, however.
I was wondering if anyone has any info about this, or options for a high school student other than the public High School on the island? Where are residents sending your children after 8th grade (post Island Academy) as an option to the public H.S.?
Thanks in advance!

I have been going to S.P. for 13 years, my son was at the Island Acedamy for a bit, I went last June and was hoping to stay for a year, one of the reasons(there were others, back home based)I didn't stay was my son's schooling, he was to begin High School, the local H.S. does'nt offer the coarses he needed, for when we returned to Canada, I could'nt get any info on the new private one, I do know there are a group of grade 9 students doing coarses over the internet, as a group with a teacher, at the time they were all girls, not what my son needed, I know of a boy that goes to St.John's College in Belize City, again not a good option for my guy, not sure if this helps, I have decided I need to stay in Canada untill Drew starts University and then I am free to go to S.P., only about 5 more years! Too bad our kids need an educaton!

Thank you for answering my post , Monica. Sounds like our sons are the same age? Mine will finish school in about 5 years. Anyway, I will still look into the new private one at the medical school and see if there is any hopes of them becoming accredited and see what ciriculum they use when I go back down in Feb.. Also, I did hear of a group doing internet schooling with a teacher..these were boys though. It sounded pricey, but I guess that is all relative to giving your child a decent education. Unfortunately, I havent gotten good feedback from anyone on the local HS and that is why I'm looking for options.
Please let me know if you find anything else out and I will post if I get any other facts.
Thanks again.
P.S. When are you heading back?

Monica,

Wow...sorry to change the subject but I believe I met you on Ac in 2000. We were all staying at the Mayan that year and my son had a few playdates on the beach with your son Drew. My son's name is Liam. Ring a bell? It's funny how after all these years it suddenly hit me as I was reading. Of course if I have the wrong person I am going to feel like a real dope! Hope all is well..Rhonda smile

My son goes to the new South Park High School located on the MUA Camus in San Pedro.
Great school, I recommended it.

my daughter attended the island academy last year, and had the same dilema this year for highschool.i checked out both lap-top schools on the island, they both are abit pricey, one has 4 male students and runs about 5,000us a year, the one at the cloisters has 3 or 4 students, not sure of the price, they are both the keystone program.i just checked out southpark high and was very impressed.i chose southpark high and she will start after the new year.students need interaction and structure.i think you should check it out.

HI Corozal..thank you for the reply. Do you know where I can find info(couldnt find anything online) or a contact email or address for the school? I will check in person in February as well. By the way, stayed at your cabanas a few months ago and had the most relaxing wonderful experience there. Can't wait to go back again..

Hello Glass. Great to hear from you about this! Thanks.. I spoke to one of the moms from one of the laptop schools'(the boys) when I was there last, and yes, I was surprised at the cost! My concern with the new high was that I heard it wasnt accredited. From what I've learned since, no school is accredited till it earns it, so I am hopeful that this is the case here. Do you know anything about this? I was worried about further education for my son if the school wasnt accredited. I am definitely checking it out when I return in February, but any info prior is greatly appreciated. If you can, please keep me informed. Thanks again.

I am gobsmacked that anyone would complain about the cost of private education on A.C.-250usd per month is nothing - I paid the equivalent of 3500usd per month to educate my (then) step daughter at a boarding school in England-I accept 24/7 is more expensive but if your kids education is not worth 10k usd per year -do not come as you really can not afford to live here-stay where you are and come when your kids have stopped costing you money (God knows when that will actually happen)

Pedro/Peter..I didnt see anyone complaining, just looking for the best education and options, but when you are a whinger, you probably see things through whinging eyes.

your input about your (then) stepdaughter's past education could be useful perhaps if there were a message boarders trivial pursuit thread. Hey, but then again, you did introduce "gobsmacked" to whoever is reading. Brilliant!

Thanks for your input??

Cheers and Happy Holidays nevertheless laugh

catdog-read your second post-what is your definition of the word "pricey", and what amount do you consider expensive and likewise what amount do you consider cheap -remember it is only your childrens education that you are playing with.

Glad to see your interest Pedro. "pricey" was used for the option of internet schooling, as I know some who do this and it seemed "pricier" than what their cost is. Pricey was still not complaining , dear Pedro, just wanting to find the best education possible that would also suit my child's needs. I wouldn't call that "playing" with my child's education, silly, that is just ballocks!

About $1,500 US per year for the on-line courses and then about $75 - 100 US per week for the "overseer" adult supervisor/moderator.

sounds very inexpensive to me
I presume that the overseer only works during term time -around 40 weeks per year
computes to 4000usd per year plus 1500usd for the course -grand total 5500usd
Surely to God, 108usd per week cannot be considered "pricey" for one childs education.

Amanda, is that weekly amount to the adult overseer per student, or is that for a small group of students? Either way, it still seems reasonable, if it's a quality course of study for the child.
