What are folks doing for Health Insurance? Need something in case of a major illness, where I would need to return to States or Mexico. We are able to take care of the everyday and meds. I know this was covered several months ago but the post seems to have been pulled.

Universal Health Services in Belize City is offering an early signing deal for their newly formed HMO. 720 bzd for the year paid all at once. Covers 80% of most procedures, hospitalizations and office visits.
We carry www.medjetassist.com air ambulance evacuation coverage. They have a flying ER setup and will take you to whichever hospital accommodation you choose. You'll have to get to the local airport that will accommodate their aircraft.
Really not looking for stand alone Medivac insurance but rather health insurance that can be used in Belize, Mexico, USA. The high deductable, just in case kind of insurance.

Amedex arranges the air ambulance for you and negotiates the rates etc. so you don't have to worry about it while you are in a crisis. The air ambulance is fully equipped and staffed with the appropriate critical care specialists.
San Pedro airstrip isn't suitable for jets. I've only ever seen 2 jets here. One was a Harrier Jump Jet - what a mess that was! The other was a gulf stream a couple of years ago. I think it was some kind of promo tour.
Most likely you would be transported via wings of hope to the international airport where the medivac aircraft would be waiting.
We're not talking a routine scheduled service, but an occasional emergency one. As you can tell from Amanda's post, it is possible to land at SP (& more importantly, take off again) with a small jet such as a Gulfstream. I don't know what jet the medical services use, and it's a question of fact whether it can use SP. Also whether fuel is available. Maybe they can post a reply? The SP strip is actually quite long and I should think there's a good chance.
I doubt civil aviation will grant a jet permission to land. You will have to go out to the international airport on wings of hope or helicopter and meet the jet there.
I have a policy with Amedex - it is ideal for my family's needs. I think we pay about $3,750 US per year for 5 of us.
The prop plane will work if you are going to Merida, Chetumal or Guatemala City. I would want to med-evaced to the States on a prop plane because of the time/speed involved.
When our son was ill we were already in Belize City at the hospital, the med-evac organized the ambulance and airport fees etc.
When we took our baby up we got from Belize City to Tampa in an hour and a half. The little guy was in an incubator, on a ventilator, ekg monitor etc and was cared for by a team of 2 specialist.
Minutes count when a life is hanging in the balance.
