i have a girlfriend who works with cornerstone, and is charged with creating a newsletter and other materials.
While HIV/AIDS is a Belize wide spread travesty, the issue on the island is even more concerning. Open sex is such a widely accepted thing among tourists, etc., but they dont know the risk. I 100% guarantee that a ridiculously small percentage of the tourists coming here looking for the time of their lives, realize the real risks. We've all seen it, the same people leaving with new tourists weekend after weekend...good for 'em i say! but when it comes to education, many people here arent even thinking of condoms...its not even a thought accoding to those i spoke with.
the country, as we all know, is so Catholic that my friends are not allowed to mention the word 'condom' when speaking to the schools about sex and hiv/aids.
I would like to see more literature in the hotel rooms at least, with a condom attached. At least the tourists can read about the aids rate here on the island, and at least think twice about not using a condom before they embark on their sexy island vacation.
no clue where the money will come from for such a project, but as more tourists come to the island, more sex to be had with locals and other tourists who might have tapped a local last night, and so on...i find it very frightening
