Renewed vitality for Northern Highway

Friday, 11 August 2006

A one-of-a kind community project to repair the old
Northern Highway/Maskall Road got under way this week
spearheaded by Edmund Castro, UDP standard bearer for
Belize Rural North.

The repairs are being carried out by residents of the area
who call themselves Old Road Residents United for Action.

They are working with help and supervision from Cuthbert
Bailey & Associate.

The road is being repaired from its Sand Hill junction all
the way to Maskall Village and beyond. Material for the
repairs are being donated by the business community,
residents and friends of the Old Northern Highway.

To raise money to complete the project a barbeque sale was
organized in the Village of Lucky Strike this week On
Friday another barbeque sale will be held at UDP
Headquarters at the Bel China Bridge, Belize City.

The Old Northern Highway has been allowed to deteriorate
almost beyond recognition. At one time it was the main
highway artery from Belize City to Orange Walk and points
beyond.

But the old Highway continues to exert a vital energy in
the development of Belize, being the gateway to nine
villages in Rural Belize, the only overland approach to
Altun Ha, one of Belize's most visited tourist attractions
and the Maruba Jungle Resort and Spa.
