Dora's Wedding
San Antonio, Toledo

This is the tale of three sisters -- Sandra, Dora and Elise. These three girls of Mayan ancestry were born in the village of San Antonio, Toledo. The Toledo District of Belize is largely populated by a scattering of Mayan villages. As soon as you cross the Stann Creek / Toledo District border, evidence of the Mayan culture is everywhere.

These are some very nice pictures and I must underscore that the Mayan people are the most humble people in entire Belize and the healthiest too, although there are the issues of poverty and malnutrition especially malnutrition in children less than 10 years of age. Although some of the villages don’t have electricity, they are already used to their way of life and have the least bills to pay, not like us who live in urban areas of Belize and even the sub-urban areas who have utilities to pay every month.

It is interesting also to note that their corn tortillas are toppa toppas and they make the best finger licking caldo. I was in Punta Gorda for a Food and Nutrition Security forum and I was happy I got to know Punta Gorda Town as I had been there for the first time. The most interesting part of your trip is to go into the villages; the Mayan people are always hospitable no matter who visits their village, they are always happy to see a friendly face.

Anyone who has not been down south, you gots to visit there.

Mary, what about the safety ? I have a Gautemalan friend and he told me that's not so safe for foreigners down there, when I wanted to visit Guatemala. Thank you.

Are you asking about safety in Guatemala or in the Toledo District? Wouldn't worry about going to San Antonio. In Guatemala it is always advisable to be heads up when traveling. Have gone many times, but use a few extra precautions because incidents do occassionally occur there.
I really enjoyed the pics of the wedding. Several years ago , we were honored to be invited to our caretakers wedding in Valley of Peace. It to was a lovely wedding and beautiful people. Thank you for sharing .

no problem with safety in this area. most problems along those lines have come from Guatemala closer to the san ignacio area, west of there up in them thar hills....

Punta Gorda is sooooo beautiful
if you have not been there, you will definitely need to take a trip there. The seaside area is a beauty also; very peaceful place and you can walk at night, not like Belize City. Early in the mornings, you can see people jogging or walking doing their routine exercise.

Does somebody know how many expats are in Punta Gorda ? Just a rough extimate. When I'm looking at the pictures, I just want to go there, maybe to live there for awhile.
