Although I plan on using a guide service
I thought that I might try some early
morning (sunrise) fishing at the split
or on the west side of the island. I've
heard that there are bonefish around the area
of the Iguana Reeh Hotel.
Can I walk on the western side of the island
or is it mostly mangroves which makes shore
fishing difficult. All and any suggestions
are appreciated.

If you are south of the split (sounds like you are) there is a little road/trail back there and quite a few peirs. Not much mangrove at that location anymore.

Do the "locals" care if I use their pier?
Should I attempt to get permission first which may be difficult at daybreak.
Of course I will not leave a mess and respect
others property. Also is it ok to swim off
of someones pier? Again I am unsure of the local customs. And one more thing, the reason
I figured I would be fishing near the split or west side of the island is because it apppears to be less disturbed but perhaps
there are some good places on the east side
as well. I guess I need to ask around, but thanks for your input.

Peirs are on Queensland and for public use. Just be considerate, like you said, clean up your mess. Swimming off peirs is o.k. also, and no you don't have to have the owner's permission to do it.
