Bring all the tackle you think you will need.
There have been numerous threads regarding
fishing. Look over the last month. If you
can't find what you need, post again.
Sorry to be so lazy..its just one of those days.

Yes bring everything!!If you hire a guide and fish the flats bring a light spinning 6 or 8 lb. test and a 20 or 30 lb. pole for tarpon, the lighter one is good for bones. I also brought a 12 lb. that I used fishing the docks catching some nice snapper.Remember the flats are shallow so don't bring any lures that are to heavy.Small buck tail jigs white pink brown really any color work when you find bones.DOA shrinp work well on tarpon, 3 inch was the best size.Bring some florocarbon leader and any thing elase you would want to try. Don't forget hooks and some split shot. A must do... rent a golf cart (its a long walk)buy some bait from a guy just south of the soccer feild and go south of the airport and start trying any of the docks, ask first if anyone is around. If you catch any thing you must take it marlas,go back latter for dinner and she will cook it on the grill for you..some of the best fish I've had in a long time..the island is awsome Have fun ..and remember its called fishing not catching....GOOD LUCK!

And don't forget every night you can see
Tarpon and many other species of fish within
easy casting distance at the split.
Tight lines!

Is it standing room only at the Split, shoulder to shoulder fishing?

Just wondering, because if you can see that many fish it is usually a fishermans dream.

Split is only famous on this site. You rarely see a sport fisherman there.

I can only recount the 9 days I was
there in March. It was never "shoulder
to shoulder" .The busiest nite had 3
people fishing. I didn't go by there
everyday but sometimes there was a person
during the day.
The amount of fish you see go by is
incredible..especially the Tarpon.
Catching them is tough. As one of the
local guides said to me..those fish
have been to the university.
One poster on this board( maybe Ragamuffin?)
had a great comment when I asked if he caught
anything at the split. He said after trying
unsucessfully for an evening he decided that it was more fun to drink
a beer ( there is a bar at the split) and
watch others NOT CATCH. Have Fun!

I returned from Caye Caulker last night and fished some portion of every day around the split.
Yes there generally was someone fishing at night but never more than a few. If you are after fish...use bait. I am sure I caught the most fish on lures last week and I didn't catch all that many. Quite a few jacks, a few snapper, 4 or 5 baracuda and one bone.

I think the DOA shrimp suggestion is a good one. I of course had 20 lbs of lures and no DOA shrimp and not enough small jigheads & small twister tails. My most productive lure was a "Gulp" 4" worm on a Sluggo-type hook. Fished very slow of jacks very fast for cudas.

I kept meaning to sabiki up some bait fish and toss one out for a tarpon but never got around to it.

By "most fish on lures" I meant of the lure-caught fish I caught the most, but that was not all that many compared to what I would have caught with bait.
