Hi all,

Anyone know of any way to get to the water taxi's in Belize City besides paying the usual $25? Last time we tried to pair up with another couple but the taxi drivers wouldn't let us. This time I'm by myself and would like to save my money for more lobster

Arrange to pair somewhere not at the taxi stand if you can. When you approach the front taxi ignore all other things said by anyone and calmly tell the guy "we all together" even if it is obvious you just met. Don't speak to anyone but the driver and hold his eyes. No loading of luggage until he quietly says yes, then move quickly to get everyone loaded while not debating the issue with any person standing there, including the driver. If he says no step up to a car farther down with a driver in it and say "the front guy don't like me and my friends and I need a ride to the City."
They can not con me like that. Remember-debate the issue with nobody and don't cloud the issue by responding to anyone but the driver. An air of unresponsive calm will defuse this well worn con at the airport. If someone else walks up wanting that taxi- ease away to the next and move down the line. Debate no one.

You may want to consider flying Maya Air. They have been having 50% off sales pretty regularly. This would make it cheaper to fly, quicker, and less hassle. These are unavertised fares, and its pretty much hit or miss. Best thing to do is walk over and ask Maya at the airport. If no sale then take the Taxi. Its very true that if you pair up with another couple first the worst that should happen is they will charge an additional 2 or 3 BZ dollars.

You are visiting a developing country from a developed country. Taxi drivers pay $10BZ a gallon for gas. Try not being so cheap so that you can be a glutton with lobster.

I have always been curious about this, in every airport I have ever been at their are only certain taxis allowed to service the airport, same here. And exiting any airport always cost more than regular fares. I realize gas is expensive here but If the same system is not in effect here. Why can I get a Taxi from San Ignacio to the Guat. boarder for $15 BZ $7.50 US. I was told its the same distance.I beleive alot of the visitors that come to Caye Caulker come on a very tight budget. They backpack, eat lots of fruit not lobster and hope to encounter freindly people and have an experience of a lifetime. Its kind of special isnt it that of all the places a person could go. they would choose to come here. It would be a shame if they changed their minds. alot of people would be out of work.

It is tough on the taxis. They can't easily raise rates since there are so many and most are gypsy. Gas is so high as well as tires and all not to mention the price of food. The airport franchize limits competition which raises prices, but they still have to wait in line for a chance to earn a living. Many visitors can afford the USD$25. For those on a budget they can take time to join together to hold down costs, letting everybody get a ride in their price range.
The driver can make a $5 more with these groups since his cost is the same. Some drivers try to con you into turning a group into a auto parade. I have had to rescue an older couple+ one single who were hot and tired and intimidated. The drivers were insisting this group go in three taxis. The woman was led by two guys back to a third taxi where I was standing and timidly ask me for help. They told me to butt out so I offered to let the Police settle the matter.
