I read here about taking the bus from Cancun to Chetumal and walking across the border. Adventure Tours has $99 r/t aifare, Dallas to Cancun. They have departures on Sunday, Monday and Thursday. Their website has more information.

What about a flight from Cancun to Belize City?

Aerocaribe Airlines the website of which is http://www.aerocaribe.com/english/Default.htm# runs flights from Cancun to BZE direct non-stop but that would be the expensive way to go.

A more economical way to go would be to fly to Chetumal and then take a taxi or bus from Chetumal across the border to Corozal where you would catch a flight direct to Ambergris Caye by Tropic Air at http://www.tropicair.com/ or by Maya Airways at http://www.mayaairways.com/ if that is your final destination. The taxi drivers are a big help crossing the border.

I thought that if you were coming from the states you had to go throught customs in Belize city? Is that correct?

You would enter the country at the Mexican/Belize border crossing near Chetumal and would be processed there.

Your plan to go to Cozumel and then by land to Belize and then by air to Ambergris Caye is a major project and will certainly take a full day if not more depending on the Mexican transportation from Cozumel.
