Word is Nova's first Ambergris-Caye-spawned larval (infant) shrimp made it well and are growing. The outlook is tasty, er, rosy for this business for Belize.
There is a huge shrimp farm just inland of Placencia. The easy pickings of the shrimp farm has been extreemly benificial to a large flock of Roseate Spoonbills which have taken up residence in the area. It seems that shrimp is among the favorite foods for the species and makes them the most beautiful deep pink in color. Perhaps the Ambergris Caye farm will also attract a flock or two which will be great for tourism.
The Nova facility on Ambergris Caye is only a hatchery, not a farm. The tiny hatchlings will be shipped to shrimp farms as starter stock. The hatchery was located on North Ambergris for its pristine sea water, necesary for this operation. The roseate spoonbills hang out on a couple of protected cayes just west of Ambergris and seem to be well fed on whatever nature provides.
When did the hatchery open? I've been trying to keep up on the news of this, and hadn't seen anything in the paper, since last year. How did they resolve the freshwater issue?
