Ambergris Caye, Belize is dubbed as “Beach Bum Central”
The December 2006/January 2007 issue of Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel magazine hit the newsstand in the U.S. with its featured cover shot taken on Ambergris Caye, Belize. The cover title “No fuss Caribbean – An island where the streets are made of sand” followed the full-color 8 page article on Belize, complete with photographs. The magazine is published 10 times a year by Newsweek Budget Travel.
The article entitled, Beach Bum Central, was written by columnist Jason Cohen on his visit to Belize. Cohen’s eight page article focused mainly on San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. He went on to speak of the culture of the people living on the island and the different activities that one can do while visiting. He quotes, “Ambergris Caye, Belize has some of the Caribbean’s top diving – then again, the scruffy island is also one of the world’s best spots for doing nothing at all.”
The article also made mention of hotels such as Tides Beach Resort and Xanadu Island Resort, restaurants including Estel’s, Elvi’s Kitchen, the Pier Lounge and El Fogon; and tour operators such as Patojo’s, Grumpy and Happy and Cari’Bean Tours. Cohen drew attention to the various amenities offered by the different operations and featured the little things that make Ambergris Caye unique. He quotes, “You’ll probably spend a lot of time doing little more than staring at the Caribbean, beer in hand.”
The images taken by photographer, Maura McEvoy supported the story in the article. A few of McEvoy pictures showed Cohen snorkeling with nurse sharks at Shark Ray Alley, which he highlighted as a favorite for snorkeling. Other images showed school girls from the island in their uniforms, young children enjoying themselves and images of the Marie Sharp peppers.
