We're planning to fly into Cancun then drive down the coast to stay in Chetumal and take day trips over to Belize. Anyone know what Chetumal is like? Is it hard to find decent food there? I mean like meat and cooked veggies or is there a Walmart type store or decent grocery store? I was wondering if it's really backward or what. We wanted to be able to prepare some meals to take on outings in case the eating establishments look pretty rough. I really do appreciate advice from those who have "been there and done that". Thanks a lot!
What a way to judge a city of 700.000 people -is there a Walmart? it is far easier to stay in Belize-especially as the most of the main attractions are quite a fair distance from the border-also it is a real pain in the butt to have to cross both borders everyday
Taking day trips to Belize from Chetumal will not be easy and will be time consuming. Belize will also charge you every time you come over the boarder,or back. Why would you want to stay in Chetumal to visit Belize? As far as info on Chetumal, try Tripadvisor.com

Easy to get to Chetumal for day trip but costly...can fly then private taxi from Corozol to Chetumal and back. FUN, great time, love the MALL! McDonalds!! Burger King!! Well, I live here.........love the restaurants and bars on the beach, to die for food! Cheap! Once you're there...I go about every 6 months for the day for a mcdonalds fix and good cerveza!
Tulum rocks, about an hour south of Cancun. Playa del Carmen is great also. The Yucatan coast offers a ton of great excursions. Bacalar is pretty wild also.
You may consider staying in Mexico to see all they have to offer. Chetumal is nice but not much to offer for a traveler. You should really stick to Mexico when in Mexico and stay in Belize to see what we have to offer.
