Of course I can hire a cart if I want to spend $1000 per month and waist my money. If i live there for a long time and have not become a resident I have to through away my money to get around the town. Thats very stupid and anti friendly to tourism. The city will be keeping people away from AC which means less tourism dollars spent on the island. Your in the real estate business. How is one expected to get around the island by foot or bike only.. I do not feel like haveing to be a slave waiting for a taxi all the time. I do not feel like walking that much.. Escrows can take several months from what I have read. Residency can take maybe 2 months for the QRP route or well over one year for the regular way. Thats a long time to be on foot...

If you buy one here on the island, there'll be a way to work it out.

So you can have one if bought on the island at a higher price. Higher price but thats better than nothing I guess. Does the same go for buying a persons car that is on the island.. If its already there you can keep it? Is that true??
What is the trick to carts or cars? Is it residency or property ownership??? Or do you need both???

You ask about getting a permit without proof you owned it. You have to show proof you bought the cart. Then you can apply for a permit to use it-this is not a quick process. Most folks ride on the old permit till they obtain their own. You do have to get insurance. Everything takes a lot of time here. If you can not wait, try Florida.

Why do you think it would be higher here? If you purchase one in US, ship it down, ship to island, pay duty and tax and fees...it will cost as much or more.

I just know of a place with good prices. If I go the QRP route then there is no duty. Will have to ship other items anyway. thanks for your help..

There is a point system that is supposed to help with the golf cart permit process; Belizeans have priority, residents earn points, you have to have an off street place to park, etc.
However, there are political issues (I’m editing this part)
At one time there were 60 people on the list waiting for approval – those of us who would not deal in the above. It took me one year to get my permit.
Here, almost a year later they got another laugh on me – I merrily stopped at the check point because I knew I was legal – NOT! They kept asking me for my ACPC sticker. My what? Seems that they just forgot to tell me, when I paid for everything else, and got my license plates – that I needed to go upstairs and pay another $25 for an ACPC sticker. Altogether they got me for another $165.
It is imperative that you NOT bring a cart onto the island BEFORE you have your permit; it can be confiscated.

"If i live there for a long time and have not become a resident I have to through away my money to get around the town. Thats very stupid and anti friendly to tourism."

If you live here, what has tourism have to do with it? How many tourists 'visit' here and want to buy their own cart? I can't believe you're serious. The problem here affecting tourism is not letting every visitor ride around in anything they want, but the fact that there are already too many vehicles and many of them belong to people who really don't even need them. Finding 'legal' parking on front street is already almost impossible and San Pedro already has a small version of rush hour traffic. These are the real problems and what MOST Tourists find to be the real 'stupid'.

ScubaLdy, How long did it take for you to get a permit when you purchased your new cart? Did the dealer take care of the paperwork for you?

You have not read the postings correctly. To live there but need transportation. No way in the world would I buy a cart for just a visit. Read what I wrote again. Keep a open mind.. If I move there it seems almost imposible to have your own transportation....

I did not order my golf cart until I had my permit in hand. When you buy a new one there is a big down payment. Once I had the permit the order process started. When it arrived I took all the sales papers along with the permit to the traffic department and got it registered and licensed.

actually gary, i do think we all read the post correctly.
anyway, take a cab. at the end of the day, it is cheaper, you dont have to deal with our stupid laws and rules, and you can ride in a real car...not some stupid golf cart

one question...have you been to the island? if you had, i'm sure you'd understand why we might get a wee bit off put by the judgements of someone saying that any ole person who wants to can just have as many carts, cars, SUV's, Hummers, and tanks as they'd like.

check out the road condition threads if you need a little more insight into our "stupid" ways.

What are talking about Pedro. We love these kinds a fugatz!

We'll make some money off of him, break him and send him on to a cheaper desination.

We want less people here spending more money. Cheap [#%!] looking to spend a dollar to save a dime can [#%!] off to Panama or Nicaragua.
