The government of Belize is about to sign a treaty with
Mexico with new border markers within the coming weeks. Our
western border was moved 2 years ago under the negotiations
with Guatemala, now the Mexican foreign minstry is claiming
that Musa will sign a new border treaty with Mexico that
will see Mexico reclaiming part of the maritime areas in
the bay of corozal. Univision Tv reported this on January
3, 2006.

México reintegrará a Belice una porción de territorio en la
frontera sur

02 de Enero de 2007, 06:47pm ET
México, 2 ene (EFE).- El Gobierno mexicano reintegrará a

Mexico will return to Belize a portion of the territory on
the Southern Frontier
Jan 02, 07 6:47 P.M.

It was made known today by the secretary of External
Relations that the Government of Mexico will return a
portion of territory to Belize that was incorrectly
absorbed by Mexico more that a Century ago.
The Mexican Chancellor confirmed in a communiqué that this
action would be formalized in the future with a new
Territorial Agreement with Belize.

"An initial agreement has already been reached and all we
are waiting for are Belize's observations on some points in
the frontier, for example The Bay of Chetumal, where the
actual treaty signed in July of 1893, with important
mistakes, considers a portion that has always been the
territory of Belize, as Mexican territory" the Minister
went on to say.

The Mexican Chancellor records that from 2003, the
Government of Mexico had presented to the Belizean
Government a proposed treaty of the border divisions and
that this "is currently being evaluated in that country".

Authorities from both nations are presently conducting
Technical meetings that will permit them to define the
basis for the signing of a new treaty, according to the
communiqué.

On the other hand, the same ministry of the government
informed in another communiqué that Mexico and Guatemala
are conducting joint studies in an effort to clean up their
common borders.

This action will permit conserving and establishing border
limitations between the both nations which has an extension
of 573 kilometers, according to the secretary.

Included in the studies that are being carried out, is the
cleaning up and the development of the border areas, and
the maintenance of the of international monuments as
markers, the establishing of the maritime borders and the
stabilizing of the Suchiate river.

from a friend....

Don't we already have a bogus border at the north??

If you look at the map, you see that the Belize border on the Eastern
Peninsula is at Bacalar Chico. It has always seemed to me that it
should be just a little south of the 19th parallel, roughly due east of
Chetumal. That would include Xcalac and associated ruins and be a
valuable addition to Belize. (We could teach them how to pronounce
'Xcalac'. <grin>)

Belize and Mexico renegotiating border?

Posted: 05/01/2007 - 10:50 AM
Author: Adele Ramos

Despite repeated attempts, Amandala was unable to get
comment today from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in
Belize on a statement posted on the website of the Mexico
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, claiming that Belize and
Mexico are renegotiating a border treaty of July 1893.

What this all means for Belizeans and Mexicans on the two
sides of the Rio Hondo is uncertain to us, since Mexican
officials here were also unable to provide full details
when we contacted them today.

This evening Mexico's Ambassador to Belize, H.E. Arturo
Trejo, said that he is aware that negotiations to redraft
the treaty have been ongoing, but in his opinion, the press
release was premature and the media has been
misinterpreting the matter.

We note that the Government of Belize has not issued a
public statement, but the ruling party newspaper, The
Belize Times, got the scoop Wednesday, as the story, dated
December 3, appears on their front page.

Titled "Mexico to return lands to Belize," the article
claims that, "The Government of Mexico today announced that
it will return land to Belize which had been wrongfully
delimitated over 1,000 years ago.

"In principle, an initial agreement has been reached," says
the release from the Mexican Foreign Affairs Ministry.
"Only Belize's observations regarding several points on the
border are missing; for example, the Chetumal Bay, where
the treaty currently in force, that was signed in July 1893
with important errors, considers land that has always
belonged to Belize, as Mexican territory."

Ambassador Trejo told our newspaper that the changes to the
treaty will change nothing on the ground, however, and no
land would change hands.

He said the objective is to make some corrections in the
coordinates in the treaty.

According to the Mexican MFA, Belizean Government officials
have been meeting with officials of the Mexico-Belize
International Boundary and Water Commission, the Mexican
Navy, and the National Institute of Statistics.
